We're on a trip in May and I'd like to play a course on the way. Somewhere around Leicester area, well say 2 hours from Cheshire heading south towards Cambridge area.

My county is not blessed with great courses, but would suggest you look at these in the order shown: Luffenham Heath, Longcliffe, Kirby Muxloe, Charnwood Forest (9 holes), Hinckley, Rothley Park, Lingdale, Kibworth, Cosby, (my club) Lutterworth, and Scraptoft. In my view the first two are the pick of the bunch and the only ones really worth travelling for. Would normally have included The Leicestershire, Birstal and Willesley Park but those are not looking their best at the moment or so I am reliably informed. I would be happy to host at Cosby if the date fits in to my very busy May Schedule of knockouts and team matches.

I am sure my fellow compatriots will be along to take issue with my order.

I would put Charnwood Forest first on Doublebogey7's recommendations.
It is 9-holes, but there are different tees for each nine giving different angles. One hole is a par 4 and a par 5 making par 69 for the course.
And there is no white/yellow - just one course to play. So the green fee means you get to play the full course.
Par 69 and Course Rating 70.3
12 over par gives you a score differential of 10.0
Do not expect "a nice little 9-holer". It is very picturesque, but a good challenge. Much cheaper than others in the area. That makes it tremendous value for money.

Willesley Park near Ashby-de-la-Zouch is very much on your direct route. Lovely course with a great variety of holes. One shortish par-3 that is steep downhill - beautiful hole.

Longcliffe is probably your best option.

Better course than those already mentioned and close to J23 of M1.

I agree Leicestershire isn’t blessed with top courses. The majority are just nice, nothing more.

If it’s en route from Cheshire to Cambridge you’re interested in, Wellingborough is a stone’s throw from the A14 and well worth a visit.

No better than several in Leicestershire and certainly not as good as Longcliffe.

So the chosen one was ......Stoke Rochford. What a great course. We both agreed it was good. We both played well, but, isn't there always a but, the wife had three bad scores, and I had one bad and one horrendous 11. And this on a piddley 260 yard par four where my 60 Deg pitch on for two held up in wind and fell into a deep pot bunker. Four swipes to get out etc etc .. Loved it. Next outing will be in France. At Granville.
