Hi,
So I am new to golf, I have had some basic lessons which has really just covered some basics and putting but I think my swing is everywhere.
I am going to have a lesson on my swing but that is going to have to be a while away. What is the best YouTube tutorial/website/advice I can get some info, there is a lot and they all say different things.
I want to get to the driving range and just practice some new drills.

Thank you (also sorry, I am sure these posts pop up a lot.

Welcome along to the madhouse and welcome to golf. Now it has a hold of you that's it I'm, afraid.

Learning from youtube and videos does divide opinion on here from time to time. Some (including myself) feel it is better to learn one on one with a PGA pro as it is easy to misunderstand or mis-interpret the information from videos which can lead to problems or curing one fault by adding another. Others will no doubt come on here and say they've never had a lesson and anything they've learned has come from youtube and they are lower than myself and that its a great resource. It's each to their own.

I do watch youtube and there is some good stuff that Mark Crossfield put out, especially a few years ago before he became quite as big on youtube as he is now, although again, he does still do some great instructional stuff. Dan Whittaker is another good one as is Chris Ryan. I hope you find a channel that helps and stick around and get stuck in here

I think I am in this limbo of impatience between my next lesson and getting better. I know it will take time, I just believe I have reached my limit of improvement on the range (or in my garden) without trying something new.

Thank you for your reply. It is really useful. I will take a look.

Not too hand.
I have no form really. I can hit a ball inconsistently and it will go about 75 yards inconsistently.
I will get myself filmed.

Hi Jay,

Having tried your approach and spent hours on Youtube, I feel there is no substitute for a lesson with a pro. These guys make a living turning poor golfers into slightly better golfers. But of course, money is money and it's unrealistic to go and spend money on lessons every month.

One approach I would suggest is to buy the Ben Hogan book, the Five Lessons - the Modern Fundamentals of Golf. This is still extremely relevant, despite being 70 years old.

This will give you a good understanding of the golf swing and might mean you will progress a bit quicker when you do take lessons if you are aware of the terms and techniques that are explained in the book. It will also definitely give you some things to work on and may lead to some noticeable improvements if you can put all the pieces together without someone standing looking at you.

Me and my golf really know their stuff , have a program you can subscribe to aswell

Crossfield does brilliant stuff but his delivery of his content isn’t for everyone

I do agree about the pro’s.
To be honest, one if the reasons I can’t have my lesson is because I actually am off to Cornwall to play with some friends. When I agreed to it in October it seemed like ages away. I didn’t actually touch a driving range until February.

Thank you. I have seen Me and My Golf and part one of a series was good.
Not sure if people would think it was worth a paid subscription, I might search the forum for some insight into that one.

You know that saying "practice makes perfect"?
It doesn't - practice makes PERMANENT.
And if you're practicing the wrong thing, that's what will get ingrained.
IMHO the best way to know you're practicing the right thing is to get individual lessons with a pro.

Mind you, others are of the opinion that the golf swing gets over-analysed and you're better off just swinging the club however feels natural to you. I have to admit that some of my best shots have been made in anger when you just whack it without thinking.

If learning from video content is your thing (it works for some and not for others), take a look at Rick Shiels, Dan Whittaker and Chris Ryan. Their content is very good and well delivered.

Welcome Jay, listen to Bobmac, he knows his stuff, he'll probably try and sell you one of his v-easy swing trainers lol, if he has any left. Seemingly they're very good (y).
best of luck

I've watched quite a few YouTube videos to improve golf technique etc, and of course they can vary in quality and relevance. As can lessons from Pros, I imagine.
One YouTube video teacher I happened across cured my shank just like that.
An immediate analysis and simple fix and drill. I was impressed. And I was with her other videos.
Look up Aimee Cho on YouTube. May be too basic for some of the obviously single hcappers on here, but as you are a beginner, I think you will benefit.
IMO she has a skill in teaching. Some pros have and some pros haven't.
Worth a look.

She is really good, already I see an improvement in my swing!

Thank you for the heads up.
