Following on from a request recently read, I think it would be good to list all our known golfing jargon and abbreviations that we take for granted but may confuse those new to the game.

I think it has the mileage to be a sticky which then can be referred back to once completed.

I'll start just on some basics but lets extend it to slices, hooks, plugged, Greensomes and more...

SSS: Standard Scratch score. What a scratch player should score around the course.
Scratch: A player with a zero handicap or better.
CSS: Competition Scratch score. An adjustment of SSS depending on performances and conditions in a competition.
Cat: The category a golfer falls into depending on their handicap, Cat 1 is 5.4 or less.
HDID: How Did I Do. Website where club competitions, stats and results are displayed.

One that always puzzles me is "Rabbits". Who or what are they? (not the fluffy ones in cages or the ones that are great in a pie!)

Rabbits: A general term for people with handicaps of 19 and upwards although there can be slight regional variations on the starting number
Sally Gunnel: Slang term for a ball hit along the ground, an ugly runner.
Topped: When you swing and hit the top of the ball, normally resulting in a Sally Gunnel

Never heard of scratch being zero or better, isn't scratch just zero?
