Golf IS going to be in the Olympics

Do golfs already pampered pooches really need a gold medal in their bulging trophy cabinets to feel a success? It would not improve their C.V's much, also how are they going to keep the multi millionaire sponsors happy when they cannot or should not be allowed to blatantly advertise via caps, bags etc. If it isn't amateur golfers only then I would not watch it.I love the game but sorry it should not be an olympic event.

Apparently the field is going to be interesting. The top 15 in the world rankings and then 2 from each entering nation that doesn't have anyone in the top 15. So most of the top 50 won't get a look in.

At the moment Poulter, Fisher, Donald, Wilson, Mclroy, Clarke and Gmac would all miss out as would Kim, O'Hair, Johnson and Mahan from USA to name a few.

And how many of the top 15 will actually go? Time will tell.

I think it is a very interesting thread this one, lots of good points.

My own opinion is that for fairness sake golf should be included as there are all manner of errr...sports included in the Olympics, so too should Golf.
On that basis......
I would much prefer it to be a matchplay tournament, that way it gives more golfers a slightly better chance of succeeding as well as making the events more interesting.
Have one bad hole in stroke play and you can very often kiss your chances goodbye.
I would like to see both pro and amateur knock out.

IMO half the sports that take part in olympics are not what I would call original olympic sporting attributes, but seeing as anything gets in now, so should golf and even tiddlywinks!

i didnt start this as a ' should professsionals be in the olympics' because they are, whether should or shouldnt be is irrelevent.

i wish the olympics were as they used to be, but i also wish it was sunny every summers day and we had 3 foot of snow every christmas day.

i still hope its a matchplay an not stokeplay!!!

I think it would have to be a matchplay event to stimulate any sort of interest and it makes it easy for the medals with a 3rd/4th place play off to decide the bronze. What happens if 4 or 5 tie for the bronze. Will they do it on countback :D :D

As I heard it's supposed to be a 72 hole strokeplay event.

They wouldn't do Matchplay - think of the loss of interest if Tiger went out in the first round.
I also believe that the promise of getting Tiger, Phil, Ernie and the rest to show up was a big part of getting the nod.

Interesting read this one.

Not that my opinion really matters. But here it is none-the-less!

It's business. Golf is in the Olympics because of the dollar. Big name participents equal bigger bucks for the TV rights, which equal bigger bucks for the IOC. End of. Thus it's the pros or nobody, regardless of the original ethos of the games - for ameteurs.

Personally, I'd rather see it for the ameteurs, but that'll never happen.

It's just business and the all important dollar. You really think the IOC give two hoots about promoting the game of golf?

Imo this should only happen at an amateur level. The Olympic gold will not mean anything at profesional level and would not carry any of the prestige the majors do. The olmpic gold should be the pinnacle of any of the sports it incorporates this is why IMO football was also a bad idea.

Pains me to say it Freddie, but I agree totally with you on this. ;)

My question is do Olympic athletes get paid? If they don't could you see all the pro golfers playing for nothing?
Keep the Olympics at an amateur level and let some of the most talented new players get their big break.

You're right, we turned that corner many years ago and cant go back now.

From what I saw on AFN last night whilst watching the PGA it has been agreed and baseball and softball were pushed asside to allow the golf and rugby in. Where will they play, a new course (is there time to build one) or an existing course.

Is it actually in or is it to be demo'd in 2016?
That's the normal process.
I can't see how they would have time to create a new track between being chosen as the venue and providing a playable, tested course.
Is this to be an addition to the selection criteria, that they have more than one (?) championship course within a reasonable radius? eliminates an awful lot of locations if it is.
