I'm a high handicapper looking to get down to below 20 by april next year.

I keep reading all about new irons and how they are for different handicap levels and it got me wondering. Based on your handicap alone, when would you consider going from your present set of irons to the next level up?

I appreciate there are always a lot of other factors involved but judging by the kit doing the rounds on here, I should get some interesting replies :p

It's a personal thing, I guess it's to do with your ball striking. If/when you feel game improvement irons/deep sole cavity backs dont offer enough feel, control and ability to shape your shots then switch to a forged iron. What are you currently using?

I play off 22 and got myself a set of custom fitted Mizuno MX200's in late July of this year.

Have only been playing properly for a little over a year and my typical scorecard goes something like 4,5,4,9,7,5,5 etc - typical high handicapper lack of consistency!!

At the same time as getting my new irons, I embarked on a series of lessons with my pro. Have had 5 lessons so far and he's set me what he feels is a realistic target of being down to 15 by the middle of next year!

In theory, my irons are too good for my handicap level, but I hit them well enough the vast majority of the time.

Now, my driver, that's another matter altogether......... :(

neil77,
You'll often see posts on here where people are talking about upgrading their irons once they get to a certain handicap level. They play well with whatever they have been using and then when they get to 10 or 9 they want to change to a "better players" club.

I was one of these golfers. I got down to 8 (almost got to 7 but ran out of season that year) and I made the biggest error in my golfing life. I bought an model that in retrospect could only harm my game.

Now 5 years later I have finally realised what a moonumental mistake I had made. Will I ever catch up to where I was ? who knows.

Before thinking of changing, think long and hard as to what you're doing. If the clubs that got you there are fine, then keep them. They can't be that bad, can they ?

;)

Based on h'cap alone....probably not.
Based on hitting the ball well and not needing so much "help"....then yes.
I AM actually looking to move to the next level up, maybe :)

I'm in that category. I'm looking for a club that will see me into single figure and reward my ball striking. I have a couple of options in mind but have decided to do the hard graft with my teaching pro over the winter and change my tempo (and possibly a couple of swing fixes) which is a major undertaking to get it from nano seconds into something slower and more controlled. By the start of next season most of the 2010 models will have been announced and I can try them and see if I need or still want to make the change. The one think I'll really be considering is a move back to stell with a slower swing but thats a whole new topic!

I had been using a cheapie set of John Letters Trilogy irons for years. Been off 12 handicap for as long as I could remember.
I got custom fitted for some new all singing, all dancing Mizuno MX200 forged irons early this year. They are lovely and cost me just under £450.00. Add a lovely new Ping G15 driver at £210.00 and a couple of fairway woods at just over £200.00 together with a GoKart electric trolley at £200.00 and a couple of lovely Mizuno hybrids at £150.00. New putter at £50.00 and a shithouse full of the best balls money can buy and bobs your uncle....I'm still off 12.
12.1 actually.
On a good day
:D

I went through this phase when i got down to 9. But to be totally honest having seen a 2 handicapper using big berthas i decided to stick with my big berthas (2004).

Some interesting replies. I was mainly interested on peoples thoughts.

I currently play with wilson staff DI5s and I quite like them. The shafts are knackered so I'm considering getting them reshafted if the costs are ok and spend the difference on lessons.

The pro at my club seems to know what to change in my game so when it comes to changing my clubs I'll get his advice. Think I will change my wedge setup though and replace my 64degree wedge to a gap wedge as I can see a space in my play there.
