Myself and Jan are off to Devon next month for a bit or R&R driving down on Sunday 17th October.
We are planning on stopping off half way for a game somewhere on the way from Lincolnshire to near Okehampton.
Does anyone have any suggestions about half way. I was thinking about St Pierre near Chepstow.
And does anyone want to join us for a game as we're staying in Devon until Thursday?

I've played St Pierre, from I remember it was wet and dark, by the time we finished, when you play the 18th, note the proximity of the hotel and the proshop and then imagine playing it when you can't see the green, never mind the flag...

From what I recall it wasn't a bad course, quite surprised to hear it has staged some fairly senior tournaments though, I didn't think it was that great, it was winter though, which may not have helped and I do sometimes struggle to see the appeal of many courses beyond the basic tee-fairway-green. To be honest I've no idea what makes a great course, I like the greens to be interesting though, which is why I tend to like Mr MacKenzie's courses.

We're staying at Ashbury Manor (don't tell Smiffy) but as we can get courtesy at most places we could play others.
Dont want to drive too far though as the drive each way will tire out Jans wee Suzuki. ;)

How long are you staying there for? Will you not be taking advantage of their (not really) 7 courses? My regular playing partner was down there for a long weekend with a bunch of mates, he reckoned it was excellent.

It might be a bit too far for the Suzuki to come up to Saunton and RND but it would be a shame to miss them while you're in the area.

Never played the courses myself, but I do know they get loads of stag do's, societies etc down there. But it does look good value for money. If you fancy staying on the site Bob/Jan I'll travel up for a game. Or if you fancy a game on a nice clifftop heathland course you could come to mine. It's about 45-50 mins from Oakhampton.

If you want a treat, Saunton East course is a must, again about 45 mins from Oakhampton.

Ashbury is great value, just do not expect the greens to be the best, due to the amount of people that play, definitley get a buggy some off the walks between tees can be long. You will find all the courses have a mix of good holes and not so good, with a lot of up and down holes.

You will have a great time Bob. I used to go there about 12 years ago with my wife and son. They had every sporting activity you could want and loads of art and craft stuff that my wife was into. My son was mid teens then and loved sports, we didnt see him all day, nor most of the night as there were lots of young girls too! Not sure letting him have his own room was good? He thought it was!

Food was average but certainly edible

I was new to golf then but the courses were very playable and I was there for the total eclipse one year and we saw it on on of the most picturesque holes you could imagine. I also won a Manor tee shirt for winning a golf comp there! I dont tell everyone that the weather was so bad that only about 4 people played in it and I shot a score that needed new batteries for the calculator to work out!

Hope you have a great time

Chris

Bob
play the kegbere, and the beeches, these are the best 2 courses. greens are fairly large, but a touch long, i think they leave them like that to protect them. you will need a buggy for the kegbere, but could walk the beeches. some nice holes, but i look forward to your review ;)
i hope the weather holds for you as it can get wet down there.
i hope you enjoy your holiday
shagster :) :)
