Hi Guys

Me and my brother will be visiting my sister at the end of March who lives in Bromley. When we are down there we are wanting to play a round somewhere. Could someone give me some advice on where the best places are to play. I have a greenfree voucher which I could use but it isn't essential.

Cheers

if your in bromley you have a few options

High elms golf club - located between orpington and biggin hill, a pay and play muni that is pretty forgiving, has a very hard par3 which is about 200 yards off the back, think its their 13th. appart from that nothing as a stand out hole but ok. about 5 miles from bromley

Parkwood at tatsfield, a parkland course that i think is a bit more of a challenge than high elms, by the time you play it should be pretty dry, but if your playing weekends its not visitors before 11am. thats around 10 miles from bromley.

Cray Valley/Raxley Corner - 2 pay and play muni courses located just outside orpington, Ruxley has a pretty good front nine but the back can get a little boring. they aquired new land and converted the original 9 hole course into an 18, 12-16 are a bit boring, and 17 is a long uphill par5 that is also pretty bland appart from the approach shot, now craw valley i think is the better course, not too tight but still a good course with plenty of raised greens and tee's. I dont think its a challenging as the front 9 of ruxley, but as a course its alot better. It also drains better than the ruxley course.

Addington court, again a muni pay and play and i think alot better than high elms, although the course is suffering a bit at the moment, theres 2 courses there so if your going to play try and book the championship course. green fee's are pretty goof value for money.

Farleigh court, recently taken over by foxhills has seen some mega improvements, with new drainage, hazzards and bunkers, and it always good condition although wind does become a factor. this is about 10 miles from bromley.

Others to consider are westerham & woldingham although it would need to be a weekday, or if your feeling really flush the addington which is now 30th in the top 100, i think from memory this is £130 a round on weekends although weekday deals are available.

You would be to any of the mentioned within 30 mins max, any other questions feel free to ask,

It all depends on what you want and what your handicaps are. In addition to the courses Oddsocks mentions (although avoid Ruxley/Cray Valley - horrible courses and always packed - and Park Wood - dull is not the word):
Top courses:
Sundridge Park - weekdays only (after a certain time) and h/cap required. East Course £60, West Course £45
Chislehurst - as above £40
Royal Blackheath - as above ££ (deal on Winter Golf til end March Coffee & Bacon Roll on arrival and 18 holes of golf for the same price as our Winter Green Fee of £40 per person! BARGAIN!

Good courses:
Pedham Place £22 / £30

Average:
Beckenham Place Park aka Braeside between £16 and £24 - website not good
Austin Lodge £23.50 / £31 (but a great £15 deal on... check website)
Cherry Lodge £25
Chelsfield Lakes £23 / £25 (Fri) / £32 (not worth it!)
Lullingstone £24 / £26
Broke Hill £36 / £40 (not worth it!)

Shout if you want more info

Thanks guys. We will be playing on a Monday and our budget is up to about 50 pounds. Looked at your suggestions and a lot of good courses there. If you had to pick just one which course would you want to play? The one that's sticking out at the moment is Westerham. Do you know when the winter buggy offer expires Bratty?

To answer in reverse order:
Buggy offer at Westerham runs out end of March (I just called for you).
Which of the courses is more difficult:
I prefer Westerham (my club) to The Addington to play regularly, but as a one-off experience, and as you can get it for £50 with the offer Mullinsbeachbar posted, I'd pick The Addington. Failing that, Royal Blackheath.
If you want best of the cheaper options, Pedham is my favourite.

Thanks Mullinsbeachbar missed that offer, may have to take addington up on that. Would it be wrong to visit family and then disappear for a whole day. £5 extra for another 18. :o

if i had to choose, id play the addington every day over westerham. Not because its a better course, but because it gets next to no foot traffic so is always in mint condition. also its had alot of work done over the last year which pays off... its looking nice.

Ill wett your appatite with a few images i have.

the 7th, a nice little par 3 with a narrow green thats very deep, around 145 from the yellows, or 165 from the whites

The 10th, teeing back off over the dyke

photo-7.jpg

The 12th par 5, looking back from the green, big up and down elevation changes, a good solid drive will get you to the bottom of the dip, ive got to the bottom with a 3w. the safe way to play this hole is a 5w/4i to the top, 7iron to the bottom then 9i up to the green, when i caddied here as a kit it was actually a par4

The 13th, their signature hole par 3 220 off the yellows, 240 off the whites

I wasn't a big fan of The Addington! Too many 'silly' holes and the bunkers had more stones in them than sand!

I'd recommend my place (Redlibbets) but it's probably a bit too far from Bromley.

.

AW, most of the bunkers have been rebuilt, the bunkers are the best they have been since i was caddying there in 93-97. in all fariness if you had played the course then and played the course now, you'd swear is wasnt the same course.

I played the course a couple of years ago - one of Smiffy's away days.

I'd heard great things about it but I just wasn't enamoured with it.

maybe smiffy just put a downer on things,...

seriously, we've played it a few times a year over the past 3 years, and its looking awesome, i think last year it was #72, this years its got promoted to #30, so it shows the way their moving the course.

I agree, I played twice in 2010 and thought it was good but not great condition. But the 2 rounds there in 2011 the course was significantly better. A real delight to play....

If you want someone who's played it before to guide you round, I might be able to join you... assuming you don't object to a gate-crasher, and the date works.

Feel free to say no, though; I won't be offended! :)
