All depends on how much you wish to spend

Best in that area is Thorndon Park, quality parkland course but old school. Superb course but expensive.

Other choices fairly close would be

The Bentley... quite a nice course, fairly challenging, ditchs run across fairways, like the course
Hartswood….council, nice little course, used to be very cheap
South Essex...3 loops of nine, used to be a member here, always liked the layout
Weald Park(now called something else, cant remember)….varied layout, okay
Crondon Park...never took to the course
Stock Brook Manor...never took to the course

Lots of others slightly further afield, Romford, Ilford, hainualt forest, west Essex, toot hill and so on

If you can get on then Thorndon Park is a great track.

Orsett is also very good (was previously used as an Open Qualifying venue....just watch out for Adders in the undergrowth!!)

Abridge and Toot Hill are also good courses and usually presented in excellent condition.

South Essex is OK....two of the loops (Eagle & Heron) are noticeably superior to the third (Vixen) in my opinion.

Hartswood is OK, friendly council run, great golf shop so you can stock up on goodies. Being built on clay soil it used to suffer immensely in the summer with dry and cracked fairways and then being a bit of a bog in the winter. Played a lot of golf here in the late 90's and went back for the first time in 15 years last summer...was still dry but they've obviously been seeking to address this by adding drainage and some irrigation.

Two courses at Hainault, but used to get extremely busy...they liked to pack you in there!!!

Personally....if you play any of the first four courses listed, you wont be disappointed.

Some great recommendations, and had forgotten I'd actually played a couple of them years ago.

Will put three or four to the other guys and bank the rest for some other days

There is nothing in this area that really stands out , but the volume and variety is plentiful . Basildon is a good course , Toot hill , Brentwood , Hartswood , Rayleigh , South Essex, Mardyke , Burstead ,Mayland , etc . To be honest there are very few that i would not go back to ,

Played South Essex on Friday, lovely track with some interesting holes, friendly staff and good facilities

Just glad we tee'd off at 7.30 as when we'd finished our front 9 you walk past the first tee which by 9.30 had four or so four balls all waiting to go out for a society day

Would definitely go back.

Thanks for the recommendation(s)

Heron and Hawk

One of the guys had played the shorter Vixen before which barely gets played as it's shorter but is he said still a good test

Like the idea of 3 nines as you could go out early or late pick a 9 to play and it not take all day

Yeah I am still to play the vixon. It's used for foot golf as it's less used but they installed foot golf greens half way down so it doesn't interfer

Do enjoy both those 9s some good holes as u say
