Golf Clubs in Wirral and around Chester

I've recently decided to start thinking about joining a golf club in chester/wirral area. I'm what could politely be called a high handicap golfer(i've no formal handicap) and am 34yo.
Having never been a member just wondered if anyone knew of any good clubs to be members of and also what to look out for joining a club?

Eastham is a decent place on the Wirral

Loads of nice courses on the Wirral. Wallasey is many peoples favourite, Royal Liverpool of course, I've also enjoyed Caldy and Heswall. Definitely worth trying out as many as you can before diving in.

I know most of the courses on the Wirral and surrounding area pretty well as I spent about a year looking for a new course. Where about are you and have you got a budget in mind ?

I live in Heswall and work near chester, so around those areas
I wasn't sure if it's worth joining a club without a joining fee first to make sure I use it enough and don't waste my money(like my old gym membership!) or once I make a decision to go for the place I like the most straight away
I'm looking up to £1k per year probably
I'd be grateful of your advice

Carden park is spot on too. 2 fantstic courses and not far from Chester
