Golf Club Hierarchy

I have only been an member for a number of months but i think im getting to notice a bit of an unwritten hierarchy. The way i see it it goes:

Current and former committee members
Cat1 golfers
Other Males
Females
Cat1/2 juniors
Visitors
Remaining juniors

I would say im at a very junior friendly club. They get a lot of cheap/free coaching particularly if they play less than 12. But i really do pity the juniors that arent palying that low (yet).

I have nothing but positive things to say about the junior members i have seen at my club. They are, probably through fear of being told off, very polite and always offer to let you play through even if its pretty clear they are not holding you up.

We had 2 playing in front of our 3 ball a few days ago. They offered to let us go ahead on the first tee we declined (why would a 3 ball jup infront of a 2??). They had a very slow group ahead of them and were always waiting. They were still on par3 4th tee as we were coming off 3rd. Again offered to let us thru but we told them not to worry cos it wasnt them holding us up. Then as we were about to tee off the group behind us were coming off the 3rd green seen the kids only getting off the green ahead and started shouting at them to get a move on from 170 yards!!!! I told them they were being held up by the groups ahead but they asked if they could play thru and "chase them on". Recognising one from the committee and other 2 as scratch golfers we let them. Seen the committee member speaking ot the ranger on the 5th and by the 6th the kids were nowehre to be seen....

I certainly wouldn't have let them play through because 'chasing them on' is a pathetic way to play round.

It sounds to be as if you have 'bullies' at the top of your clubs hierarchy; which is a shame.
 
Sounds like the stereotypical golf club committee and scratch golfers. They think they own the club and everyone should bow to their supremacy. Fortunately at my club we do not seem to have that problem. All the way from the committee, the scratch players all the way down to the beginners, everyone is very friendly.

I think having people in a club with a poor attitude only encourages others to be like it themselves. What impression have they given to those juniors? They are just encouraging them to turn out the same as they are, ignorant bullies.

Despicable behaviour and the kind of thing that winds me right up. It's also poor etiquette from the group in front, the sort of thing that leads to stupid-long rounds. And what did they say to the ranger? Did the kids leave the course altogether or did they just skip ahead of the group holding them up?

On the whole i think club is very forward thinking but every club seems to have their own ********.

Dont know what was said to the ranger just seem him speaking to him and then the kids were gone. Maybe theyd only planned to play first 5 im not sure...the group holding everything up appeared to be a granfather out with his grandkids.
 
I know what you mean about the higher handicap juniors almost being 2nd class citizens.
I remember being a junior captain and making sure to play with all juniors (of all levels) in comp's during the year beacuse I remembered that when I first started the captain that year did the same and he encouraged us all.
Some other junior captains were only really bothered about playing with their mates.

With regard your situation, did you have a word with the Ranger so's to give him the full story and not just the committee members criticism?

...who should have known better. This is the other part of this story, people not allowing others through and clogging up the course, but pales in insignificance next to the behaviour of these lads shouting at and "chasing on" the juniors. As you say, why would a 2 ball let a 3 ball through? It's obvious this isn't the first time they've been bullied around the course. I understand though that's it's a difficult position for yourself. I too just joined a club and don't know anyone, so it's tough to know who to say anything to cos you could just be talking to these guys' buddies and introducing yourself as "trouble", even though you're clearly doing the right thing.
 
Interesting that some folk look at the problem differently to me.
Perhaps the comittee member was sacking the starter for incompetance and carpeting the member with g'kids for causing the problem.

Nope, think folk recognise that grandpa wasn't helping and none of us know what was said to the ranger but if the kids were nowhere to be seen... They hardly came out to play 5 holes and still wanted the lads to play through. If the committee members group couldnt help themselves from shouting at kids on the green with a group between them I doubt they are the shining light in this story.
 
At our place on Sunday in the comp it was the Captain and his group that held everyone up!!

A record slow round of 4 hours 17 mins for a 3 ball going off first group out, on the first tee. Everyone complained!
 
Curis, my comment was slightly tongue in cheek.
As a retired golf course manager I recall that I once called a two shot slow play penalty on the club captain.
That caused a bit of a stir. The Captain was great about it and said that he would have done the same.

I find that politicians and comittee members tend to fall into the same categories.

As a generalisation of threes

One want's to make a buck out of it.
One wants to improve his/her social status
One wants to make things better

So every third one is a good one.
 
Juniors do get some unecessary crap from what ive seen. I was a visitor at one course (wont mention the name) when i saw two of their members hit balls at the juniors on the green for holding them up! Even though there was two groups in front of them holding them up and it wasnt their fault. I went into the shop after and explained what happened and left my details in case the juniors wanted to take it to the comittee etc.

What annoyed me was these idiots would not have done this to the juniors had their parents or indeed an older member been with them which in my eyes makes them bullies.

Ive heard loads of people at various courses i have played blaming the juniors for wrecking the course too which is a bit unfair.
 
Like so many stories we read, we hear one side and make a judgement. Like an old Irish uncle of mine told me, "there are 3 side to every story". Your side, their side and then the truth.


I recall playing behind a four ball of kids and they were better golfers than me. Problem was they all thought they were in a pro competition. 6 or 7 practice swings prior to every shot. Taking an age with putts, walking around the green lying on the floor to read the green etc etc. I'm probaly jealous, if I lay on the grond to read my putt, I might not get up again

Either one would have worked for me.

I agree with your point about the reason people put themselves forward for these things, sad but true. That's great about the captain getting penalised and his acceptance of it, can't imagine the likes of this group being as magnanimous
 
Bullies thrive when people roll over for them

Some people wouldnt have let them play through and told them that the juniors werent doing anything wrong, 'now wait your turn'. If enough members handle it this way, the problem will probably go away. Why fear them? I am not talking about the juniors here
