By all means, try a sleeve of each of the very good recommendations here. But just be aware that the ground conditions that we've experianced over the last month won't enable you to make a 'good' choice for you.

It's a very personal thing, ball choice. Some on here don't like the Z-URS at all, others do. Same with any make and type of ball you care to mention.

I was once told to try some balls on the putting green, ditch those that you don't like the feel of. Then try some chips with what's left, ditch those that feel horrid. Then try some pitches, ditch what you don't like, and then move onto the driver. You should end up with one or two balls left; and there is 'your' ball.

Alternatively get 'custom fitted' on a launch monitor for your balls. There I've said the cf word!! Apparently it's the 'in' thing.

Try using a ball you don't like very much for a whole round, i did and i was surprised at the result their was no difference on my score. Yes there are balls i prefer, but at what standard of play does the technology of the higher priced balls kick in, to have a real effect or are we just paying for the advertising ?

I disagree. If I had to play a brand I knew I didn't like it would have effect on my game. Granted it might only be in the mind but I'm certain I would lack confidence on and around the green which would translate into more tentative approach shots and putts and I'm certain frittered shots as a consequence.

There is no substitute to the pro V1 in summer, end of.

Simply the best ball on the market bar NONE!!

In the winter you can use a cannon ball so just go with the cheapest.

Nothing compared to the pro v and they might get a lot cheaper with the arrival of the new pro v

Dont think so, but anyway, cheap balls. I did post here last july or so when I used a Dunlop lo-co and hit 71 blows round haddington GC in windy conditions. Not a great ball but I would give anything for that score again. When it dont spin much it dont hook much.

Hi there, thanks for this information, i was not aware that there are lot of types of golf balls. I was thinking there are two measures only, like we have US and UK. Thanks again.

That is your opinion buddy. That is the ball that works well for you and in your opinion thats the best. I still prefer the feel of the TP Red for putting compared to the Pro V1 in fact I prefer the Pro V1x over the Pro V.

Blades might be the 'best' clubs but they're not for everyone. Same with balls. Some premium balls generate, or rather, we generate too much side spin and therefore our hooks or slices are exagerted by the ball.

That's why there is no 'best' anything for everyman.

I bow to your greater ability, but I'm the master of sweeping statements and generalisations 'round here!! :D

respect your opinion but couldnt disagree more
Sort your swing out 1st
The ball doesnt make you hook or slice more or less to make a noticeable difference.
You ended up 10 yards off the fairway because you hit it there.
If you shot a level par gross with a pro V1 then it would be a level par gross with a TP Red,Wilson Staff Dx2 or any other premium ball because you played well.

Put your proper golf swing on any ball and it will go straight just different distances depending on its make up.

Short game and putting is admittedly more personal.

Agreed that the swing is the all important part, though I was under the impression that a premium ball spins more than a 'distance' ball, and therefore exagerates the swing error, ie. hook or slice. Yes we'll (us hackers), will still send it left or right, but more so with a premium ball.

At least that's what I was lead to believe. If that's not the case I'd loved to us Pro V1s all day. If only I didn't loose one or two per round!

That brings me to ball contruction. Two piece verses 3 piece. Again I understood that 3 piece balls spin more, and therefore exagerate the side spin. Which is why 2 piece balls ar suggested for (not correcting swing faults), but to lessen their impact on the effect of the swing.

I hope that makes sense. I don't mean to be argumentative for the sake of it, but it's how I understood it to work.

The problem with higher handicappers using premium balls is that they cost more and with more off centre hits they dont last as long and you go through more balls than with a ball with a more durable cover hence costing a lot of money.

If money is no object then play a premium ball.

If you use a pineapple or any other pebble your worried about losing distance.
Yes you may lose a bit but no where near as much as you think and what you gain in every other way more than makes up for this.

In my opinion unless you have a significant feel in your short game and/or a significant long game consistancy or even shape of shot, then you could successfully use any half decent make of ball to play to your standard or better. A lot of ball choice for the majority is in the mind or even fashion or peer pressure and unless you have a very good skill in the game(or have had such skill in the past) it will make little difference to the average golfers play or standard.
I know a lot of people dont want to accept that their ability is less than their belief and Im not trying to insult anyone, but I believe it a reality.

The prov1 is an exceptional ball, I dont use it because I no longer have the feel anymore nor the skill to do what I used to be able to other than by accident(and I wouldnt want to spin a ball when I didnt wish to), if it wasnt for that fact then I would use them.
I use a half decent ball preferably from the bargain sales and get on fine with them.
The ball you use is your choice, advice about balls is subjective and sometimes nonsense and belief can be as useful as it can be useless.
Trust in your ability to play the game before trusting in the make of a ball, however, if you can afford prov1s all day long, fill yer boots.
