Going without fairway woods

I bought an Aeroburner mini driver, 14 degrees, this year, to replace my driver, but it's more like a 3 wood so it replaced that instead. Best purchase for me was an Adams Tight Lies 5 wood to replace my 20 degree hybrid. Really easy to use off the deck, and dirt cheap at DG.

I have ditched my hybrid/fairway woods and now use my driver from the tee. If I require a 180 yard straight drive I swing the driver half way like a half pitch shot. I have been doing this since May last year and can honestly say I have had only a handful of wayward tee shots and I play 3 times a week off 4.1

For the fairway I have my trusty 3 Iron AP2 716...........hit it sweet and it goes miles, hit it off centre and it still travels...unlike a slightly topped hybrid or 3 wood...

Does anyone else use the driver with half a swing for some tee shots?

I use most of my bag on an average round.

Newark is a good course for tee shots where there is variety of what you can hit based on personal preference.
In current winter conditions I hit hybrid, FW and driver over the 18 holes as the course is not a boring driver driver par 3 driver driver......

Quite often. Sometimes its simply a little clip. ball teed up quite high so its a foolproof way of making contact.

Little clip means there is very little spin so ball tends to run out a fair bit too. really safe shot.

3 or 5 Fairway wood comes in & out the bag depending on the course and likely weather/wind conditions (basically down to how many 2nd shots will I really need it on or can I use a hybrid)

To those who don't use fairway woods because you don't get on with them, maybe have a lesson with them and do some practice.
You may not need them very much if your course is short but you may need them on other courses/away days/forum meets etc

All depends on the course set up and weather conditions for me.

Sometimes off the tee I use it, sometimes off the deck. For example a 350-400 yard par 4 I could use the 3 wood of the tee which would leave a 9iron or wedge in. Its all about course management! But completely understand if you're not comfortable taking the shot! Personally practice with it and get comfortable on all clubs!

Amen brother.

used mine yesterday and that was with no wind. Tee shot on 2nd as that favors a draw, tee shot on the 5th to stay short of the bunkers in front of the green, 2nd shot on the 7th which is a par 5 in the summer at 500 yards and a par 4 in winter at 480, usually into a strong breeze. 2nd shot on 13, tee shot on 15. Would prob use it more in the summer.

I didn't know you had moved to America?

My 3 wood is my fav club in the bag. I'd rather give up my driver than the 3 wood. Together with hybrids being the devil's own invention then I'll be playing a 3 wood for the rest of my days.

Only really use my fairway wood off the tee. So keep it in the bag if the driver is going a little bit off. But I cannot stand my hybrid. Hate using them.

I could probably do away with the driver. I'm much more consistent with the 3 wood off the tee and am happy to hit it off the deck.

Played against my father in law at the end of last year. He hit driver on the 17th and I managed to drive past him by about 5 yards with the 5 wood so I don't worry about losing distance.

Probably one of the least used clubs in my bag. More comfortable with driver of the tee and only really need it for mega long par 4's or reachable par 5's. Never felt really comfortable with it, but when I do get it right it goes like a bullet. Will probably leave it in, but ditch my hybrid which I really don't like now for a Ping Crossover, prefer the shot shaping ability of an iron over the hybrid/wood style clubs.

I picked up a NOS Cleveland Mashie 5w (18deg) at the end of November and it has been a complete revelation.

Was using a rather tatty SLDR 19deg hybrid before but the Cleveland is soooo much nicer to hit, and more consistent too.

Distance-wise it's only 10 to 15m shorter than my driver off the tee and a lot more likely to be straight. Off the deck it's a bit more variable, but still better than the SLDR.
