Early dart from work last night, 3 of us teed of at 4:15, course deserted.
As we finished the 1st we looked back and there was quite a crowd on the first tee, 'timed that well' we laughed to each other.

All playing quite well, playing at a good pace, keeping an eye on those behind (having been well versed in the importance of letting people through by the father-in-law).
We can see they are playing as three or four 2 balls.
As we are walking up the 7th after our drives, the leading group are doing the same down the parallel sixth, they're waving & shouting 'come on lads hurry up, get a move on'.
This continued most of the way round the rest of the course on pretty much every hole, shouting various comments like 'come on you’ve got to speed up lads'.
Only at one point did they have to wait for us, as we holed out on a par 3.

They seemed to be very good players from what we could see, hitting some cracking shots, but as far as we could see were very keen on gimme's!
By the 16th or so they were lucky not to get some serious verbals back.

I didn't think at any point it was feasible to let them through. Although at many points it would have been feasible to swear at them.
I would always let someone through if we've lost ground on group in front, and we were holding anyone up, but what else could we have done?

We finished at 7:15, and as we stood around and watched them hit to the green then pick their balls up, were quite restrained in a polite 'plenty of light left then?' comment.

Anyway I'm blaming the pressure for failing to break 90 again! A frustrating 91.
Spent last night considering my scores & have decided I can pick up most shots by improving my greenside chips to get nearer the flag.
That's my practice regime for the next 2 weeks.
I will shoot sub 90 before the end of May!

It doesn’t get dark to near half 8ish now so there was plenty of time if you ask me plus the fact you tee'd off at 4:15 which is more than enough time for a 3 ball to finish plus the rest.

Sounds to me they were just plain ignorant trying to make your group rush when really no need to plus if only had to wait on one hole which is expected on a par 3.

You want to enjoy your round and not be worrying about folk basically trying to push you off the course

3 hours for a 3 ball is fine.

If the lot behind aren't putting out, why are they bothering playing at all?

I admire your restraint.

Its one of the things that annoy me about golf at the moment we are always being told that play is to slow, so even when it isn't people tell you to hurry up, I would have told them to start putting out and there wouldn't be a problem, 3hrs for a 3 ball is a good pace.

I find it very difficult to play when in traffic, sounds like you were playing very fast, probably too quick for your own good, you'll break 90 nothing surer.

Personally I would never ask anyone to let me play through, or comment on their speed, and believe me I've been in a fast 2 ball behind some slowwwww 4 balls in the past, I just don't think it's right to ask - are people with me on this?! It's up to the players in front to decide to let you play through, if they have no etiquette/manners and hold me up I lose repspect for them on every hole but don't give them verbal, it's supposed to be a gentlemans sport.

What happened in this case was an outrage, not only were they NOT being held up, but shouting abuse across a fairway in ungentlemanly conduct to say the least.

Call me old fashioned ;-)

"I admire your restraint."
yes but i'm still simmering now!
I hit some really good shots last night, consistent off the tee, two birdies, but my main memory is getting riled by these daft women.

"would have slowed down, just to wind them up..... "
1 out of 3 of us really wanted to do this......

"im guessing from your post a few drives were up your a**e before you was clear? "
I think once or twice we were aware of a ball landed behind us as we walked away - no problem with this, never felt in danger of getting hit. Attitude & verbals the problem, and the worry that behaviour like that on the course does mean some people will get more reluctant to let others through when it is appropriate - every now & again its my group pressing the one in front!

(need to learn how to do multiple quotes!)

You played in 3 hours? Then you played at a very good pace and have nothing to be concerned about, unless the group behind were very fast and waiting on you then you should let them through regardless, if you werent holding them up then there isnt more you can do. My own experience is most good golfers generally arent pushy in the way you have described, if the group ahead is making good progress (and 3 hours for 18 is good progress) then they wont have any complaints! Sounds like you encountered some people who were probably panicking that they wouldnt get round before it got dark.

If they were that keen to keep moving I think I'd have waited on a short hole and let them through. Just to avoid the aggravation factor that obviously spoiled your round.

Yes, and i think if they were on their own we would have done, but they were with the 2 or 3 pairs behind them, and once you start where do you stop!

Anyway thanks everyon eI feel better for talking through my frustrations and my thoughts have now turned to visualising chip shots rather than still trying to think of some appropriately sarcy put down in response !

That would really annoy me. Most people are sensible enough to know when to let people through. If im playing and i think im in danger of holding someone up ill stop and wait on them to let them through as long as the course isnt too busy behind them, if it is then we'll make a concentrated effort to play a bit quicker.

We were out a few weeks ago and the 3 guys behind us nearly hit us with balls 4 or 5 times and not once did they shout a warning. We werent holding them up,they were just being idiots. One hole was still on winter greens which is next to the tee box we were on,they didnt wait for us to clear the tee box before hooking their balls in our direction. They also teed off at the 17th while we were putting and nearly hit us. We were tempted to play slower just to annoy them.

I agree, I'd have told them to catch up on the next par three and then let them through having played your tee shots first.

If they can't catch up by then, they aren't that far up your backside, so they had their chance, and can now play to your pace.

I was standing on the 17th tee as part of a three ball having just played our shots, we had reached there in 2 hours 50, so more than reasonable. An older guy who had just hit the par 3 green 16th, walked over to me and said you lot need to get a move on in a really rude and agressive manner. I promptly told him to "go F*** himself".

Job done.

to the point colin... was it your own course or were you playing a course as a vistor/guest?

It was my own course, the 'gentleman' in question was known to me and is known to be a genral pain in the backside. He had already had words with us on the 9th in his aggresive manner, which we pretty much ignored. On every tee behind us I could see they we standing on the tee with their hands on their hips ( you know the pose I mean right ? )

Also, we had not fallen behind the group in front of us at all ( also a 3 ball ) and they were clearly way ahead of the group behind them.

Let me also add this was a monthly medal.

If they weren't in the comp (they can't have been if not putting out), then they can defo stuff it, and I'd have been complaining in the office afterwards. Comps take priority on the course.

Played Tuesday night at my home course, got to the 5th and a 3 ball were on the fairway.

They waved us through and after hitting my tee shot I went fat pitch, fat chip, thin chip, sod it we'll play the 7th! :o

The curse of playing through strikes again!

Its the pressure of a watching crowd!

Me and my brother let a 3 ball through last night at the 10th tee, they were a hole and a half behind us but my brother had a sore back and wanted to sit for 10 minutes and let his painkillers kick in plus they seemed to be good golfers and were going at a very quick pace. Course was empty and we werent in a rush so i dropped a few balls around the 3rd green and got some chipping practice in while we waited on them catching up.

All 3 of them messed their drives, one topped his about 20 yards down the hill (which is a feat cos you can putt the ball off the tee box on this hole and itll run 200 yards down the hill) and the other 2 sliced theres over the trees onto the 11th fairway.

Happened to me when i played in the one and only competition ive played in. Only time we had a crowd all day, nice big fairway, uphill and a reachable green if i hit it well. Tee up,set myself, driver on the ground, dink, balls rolls off the tee. :o

2nd attempt was much better, reached the green but rolled off the side into the bunker.
