Getting The UK Economy back on track

They could invest the same amount of money in private companies, either in national infrastructure development or elsewhere, far more productively imho. It's the very definition of a vanity project.

For me, its a bit like putting a new bathroom in the house. The house already has a bathroom.

It's a fascinating (horrifying if you're paying) story from start to finish. Probably best put somewhere else, as this thread is likely to be more interesting if it stays on topic!

In the spirit of which, it really would be nice if we could find a way to tax the global corporations who are happy to benefit from the rule of law, provision of infrastructure and civilization despite paying a barely dime for the privilege.
In fact, most of the dubious practices allowing large sums of money to be spirited away without paying tax could do with a workover.

HS2 to go out of the window. Move the spend to other sectors - incl pay hike to Blue Lights and Key workers.
I am more muted on tax rises. Instead of a tax rise, put a additional cess of 2% across all VAT for one year
Brexit is 'already done' but it is not real yet. Move the transition out by 2 years till we stabilise. It is our law and both sides are in a pile of poo. No one wants another shock to the system. Companies would rather spend the money into the economy rather than spend it setting up transition arrangements for Brexit.
A small tax on Dividends would be another way to raise to money
Also throw out the austerity rule book

Dividends are already taxed. Anyway instead of taxing and removing money from people should we not be encouraging people to spend again, get the economy moving?

Well, think any thoughts of cancelling HS2 can be dismissed... As it's firmly on the list of what Boris wants to get done...

That was before this crisis. There is no reason to think that this decision is set in stone. The depth of the attack on our financial reserves and economy is going to be massive, beyond what could have been thought feasible before this crisis.
I don't think any Prime minister of any party would refuse to review his pre-covid decisions, in view of its impact.
Don't think much is firmly on any list at the moment?

If he did bin it he would make many of his constituents very happy... From what I've heard locally... Work is still ongoing in these parts...

Doesnt take long for the personal prejudices to surface along with the divisive attitudes.

How about we bury the old divisions and each of us look to see what we can do to get us out of this horrible situation. OK, it will be a time to consider how and who could contribute but looking over our shoulders at others wont be a great starting point.

Scrap HS2 and get on with the tunnel under Stonehenge

20 mins London to Birmingham or 2 hours Amesbury to the next section of dual carriageway (about 5 miles) what is needed more?

besides which we have been asking for a Stonehenge bypass for 40 years.

Absolutelty, put money in people's hands. but need to 'control' where and how much you put. Too much money, chasing too few goods will lead to inflation and tigther fiscal control. They can continue the low interest rates for another year but by keeping a small cess (rather than raising the full rate) could be a way to balance out supply & demand. But I am no economist.

I have been banging this drum for few years now , the tax cuts they put in to win votes in the personal allowance

This tax year for example works out about £9 a month for me and about £10 less a month for the wife

This has been for years and years

Why not use the money for funding something

Would be perfect now to get some cash back

Rough figures would say with 26 million employed that would be over 200 million a month back into the economy

Im guessing youre not earning 10-20k if you think that

The wife earns between those as she is part time,

People struggle I understand but this extra £9 has just come in last week. Reversing that would be a small change

It's going to be tough times for everyone however ahead

and you clearly dont, so the impact of that wouldnt be felt by your family compared to a single income family earning 10-20k

But that's the point. They have been cutting things back for years then handing us a little money back

Could just use that money to fund things so the poorest get the help they get whilst those who don't need it can go without it......

I consider the raising of personal allowances, especially for the low paid is a help to people on low incomes, £20 a month to many people is a great help. If it's not a benefit to better off people then maybe an increase to higher tax brackets to claw it back would be better.

so how would you structure taxes to ensure it aids those who need it? (loaded question i know but the personal allowance is proven to be one of the best ways to aid those who need it)
