Received a mail from the club stating that, from 1st Jan, at our club, it has been decided that ALL penalty areas will be deemed red.

Anywhere else doing this? Thoughts?

Yes, we’re doing that, gives you an extra option over Yellow stakes.

We are only going to have red penalty areas.

We considered all our "hazards" and decided that there were none that needed to be retained as yellows - as we have none where playing over the hazard is regarded as "integral" to the play of the hole. (That is, all our hazards are pretty much "lateral" in nature anyway).

For example, you may have hole with, say, a large pond in front of tbe green. A ball could be played over the pond, land, then roll back into the pond. If it was marked red there would probably be the option to drop on the green side of the pond. But your club might feel that that was not in the spirit of play for that particular hole, and so could mark it yellow to require a drop to be "tee-side" of the pond. We decided we had nothing of that nature.

Thanks for this. With water in play on a 14 holes, there are a number where this scenario may come into play and that's the sort of thing that worries me with such a sweeping change. I don't have high levels of confidence that they have considered it thoroughly, so i'm looking for relevant scenarios to consider against our layout.

We are doing it at our place....will simplify a couple of things on a couple of holes and also was a chance to get a couple of hazards (old terminology!) marked better.

Hole 4. A poor tee shot goes left, crosses the PA, lands to the top left (just beyond the top left corner) and bounces back into the water. PA now effectively out of play.
Similarly 13. Ball enters at bottom left side of PA (hole location may be significant)

4th - If you can’t hit it 140 yards off the tee then you need all the help you can get!

13th - too penal even if SI 1.

SI is (should be) irrelevant these days.
However the hole will have been rated according to its proximity to the green and the difficulty in hitting over the water.

But I don’t think the hole is designed to hit it over it on 13, otherwise it would come out further left and be a proper SI 1 (but better as a longer par 5 if that was the case).

Yes we decided to do this partially because the new yellow relief area already covers much of the additional option and simplicity on introducing new process.

KGU have issued their new hard card, for application at all KGU organised events at any course, and it designates all penalty areas as red.

Yes, on reflection it can certainly be argued that the LHS is lateral to the playing direction. But probably not a forced lay up.

And it’s also says GUR relief is mandatory - any ideas why?

Our greenkeeping staff are in the process of converting all our yellow penalty areas to red but have run out of red posts.

Can the committee implement a local rule telling players to consider all penalty areas as red even if still physically marked as yellow?

Young Trees - are no play zones

How is the limit of the zone defined?

In fairness, the KGU is probably the most misinformed and poorly organised/administered golf union I have played in. So backward and you wonder why golf struggles.
