I have an official handicap and have only ever played social swindle games at my current course etc

If i change to a new club i have decided i would like to play in the weekend medals etc, how easy is this to take part and enter or are they closed shop with the regular members ?

I would be entering as an individual if i join a new club as i will not know anybody at the new club initially

Advice please most welcome

Anyone can enter the competitions and it is a great way to meet new members. Most clubs have some sort of start sheet where you just stick your name down. If in doubt, chat to the Pro or the Secretary and they will fix you up with a game. Same applies for pairs competitions, they will help you find other single players to pair up with.

Don't get worked up about it, after all we play golf to relax, enjoy ourselves and make new friends

Another factor on choosing club, some clubs you arrange your own game on a set day, other you enter and times are drawn, pluses and negatives for both methods. Another way and the current one at my club which is a very good system especially for new members (I am one) there is an electronic booking system over the web (brs) at 4.30 on a Friday 3 weeks before the comp and it's a free for all you choose your time and can book 1,2 or 3 people in so you can have your own voice of group or a singleton can book in and get a game and meet new members, also everyone chooses roughly time they want between 7.30 and 15.00.
A question to ask the sec at any propective new club.
Another option for comps is opens or one of the amateur tours, I found atourgolf for the north west a good option.

Our monthly stableford and medal has an entry sheet in the pro shop. You get drawn so no choice in who you play with which is a great way to meet a lot of members frequently. There is also a roll up element once the booked morning times have finished so you can choose to play with your mates (3 and 4 balls) and go out later.

We also have a couple of big weekend roll ups who tend to go out later en masse. If your club has something similar and if you can join them for a few social games first it shouldn't be too hard to get a competitive game. I'm sure the new pro wherever you join will see you right

Thank you for the advice i am sure clubs have their own way of running comps

I am looking forward to starting playing "proper" comps instead of just the swindle as i think it will sharpen my game

Put my 3 cards in at the start + additional cards, you do not need to play comps to keep HCP current as long as cards are submitted and signed by a member, standard practise i thought at most clubs ?

You have to play at least 3 competitions a year or your handicap will be inactive and yoy won't then be able to play in comps.

i was going to ask how you had an official h/cap if never playing comps, and secondly why don't you play in comps at your current club, this post makes no sense!!!!

If you move club wolfman, start playing in the comps as it's a good way to get to meet people. It may take a bit of effort to start with, but it'll be worth it in the end.

Thanks for the advice

Just to confirm i have checked and my handicap is active and i now have my CDH number

Please remember i have only been with the old club ( where my hcp is held ) for a short while, 3 cards handed in etc as already stated

I fully understand if i stayed at a club and played no comps my HCP would become inactive but at least it is still active and i can transfer it

I can then enter comps, result !

so am i correct in the following, you joined a club, put 3 cards in for your h/cap never entered a comp at the club and have left, now wanting to join another club to play comps.my original question still stands as to why you never played comps. at your old club, very strange!!!!!!!

Not at all strange,
Some stuffy clubs still have the "you can't join without a hcp" rule, so you join a more enlightened club, get your hcp then move to the stuffy one!

still does not answer the question why he never played a comp. at his old club.

Why do you query this 6" cup, are you the HCP gestapo or something ?

Noy everybody joins a club and goes straight into official comps, i was playing the weekly swindle and little time to enter anything else, nor the desire until now.

Seems perfectly reasonable to me. I must say I'm a little shocked by a couple of posts on here! Not very welcoming or friendly, almost accusatory! Not good form chaps.

Ask your pro how the comps work and then put your name down, you'll be fine :-)
