When people don't let you play through.
Today the snow was finally clear off my course so thought i'd have a quick hack around on my lonesome and test my new putter out.
Was really busy, but got through the first nine quickly with a pb of 40, after a couple of groups kindly let me play through. Got to hole 11 though and ended up stuck behind a fourball of the 'elderly persuasion'. Stood on the next tee and they said "oh, you've chosen a bad day to come on your own!". I asked why and she replied "Well, there's a comp on so we won't be able to let you play through".
So, does common courtesy just fly out of the window when there is a competition on then?
Destroyed any rhythm I had, so ended up playing 2 more holes and called it a day.
Rant over

Just because its a comp shouldn't stop them letting u through, interclub matches then ok, but just medals or sweeps I wouldn't have thought it would be a problem.

Sad mate. Those are the type of people that are putting people off the game

At my club, I believe you are only to let people through if you lose a hole on the people ahead. If the foursome in front you did this then yes they are being silly by not letting you through, if they was up with play then if I was on my own I would not expect to be let through as its youre choice to play at that time when the course is busy.

Completely understand where you are coming from.

On a personal level to date, I've only had issues with the older players at my course.

I have to disagree here. If I was in the middle of a comp, with fellow competitiors ahead I wouldn't want a solo player coming through and spoiling the rhythmn of my round especially if I was in a flow and playing well. If it was a normal day then I'd have no qualms about letting you through but I do think priority should be given to a competition

I'm with Homer on this if we had been keeping up with play then i would not like to let someone thru if i am playing a comp.

I wouldn't expect to be let through a comp if no-one had lost ground and wouldn't be letting anyone through if I was in the comp TBH. If it wasn't a comp, then no problem

I remember I got stuck behind a 4 ball of coffin dodgers years ago. After an hour and 10 minutes I had completed 4 holes and the steam was coming out of my ears by this stage. I walked onto the 5th tee and asked to play through and was told "you'll be old too one day son" "we're out to enjoy it" blah.

I waited till they were about 40 yards off of the tee and proceeded to smash a driver over they're heads and played through much to the horror and annoyance of these old dicks. A few sweary words were exchanged as I marched through them.

I don't recommend that course of action to anyone but it was fun and I was only 19 or 20 and had a worse temper then than I do now!

Funny that... I've only ever had 'issues' with younger players at my course...

Insisting on putting everything out [when not in a comp I am talking here] after first 'reading' the putt from every angle... Then proceeding to hi-five/knuckle all and sundry on sinking every blasted two/three footer...

I get really mad with this sort of attitude... There is absolutely no excuse for it... Reason I get mad is that a couple of years before my old Mum passed away some young cock of a driver didn't like the time Mum was taking to cross the road... So to 'teach her a lesson' he revved his car up and drove at her to gee her up... Which paniced my old Mum into a fall requiring much repair work at A&E... Apart from hospital visits Mum never left her home again for the last couple of years of her life... Sadly no witnesses were quick enough to get a registration for the car they were more worried about Mum's condition... If they had done so said driver would have got exactly what he deserved a baseball bat right between the eyes...

Letting people through only really helps if there is somewhere for them to go. If a fast twosome catch up behind a bunch of foursomes playing in a comp, but they are tightly packed, there isn't a lot of use in letting the two through. If there is a gap, fine, let them through.

The voice of reason. If there was a club comp with a full field of 3 or 4 balls then an individual golfer shouldnt be let through the entire field.

I often play on my own either first thing in the morning or late evening and generally get let through by slower players but I wouldn't even consider playing on my own on a competition day. All the comps at our course are block booked and I go out first thing so this has never happened to me but if I was playing in a comp elsewhere and a casual player came up behind me then I would'nt let him through as I'm sure we'd be playing at the correct pace and distance behind the group in front (keeping up with the group ahead and not ahead of the one behind!).

So let me get this straight then. You turned up on your own on a Saturday morning, there was a comp on, it had been snowing all week, so no golf had been played for a week so everyone was getting out while the weather allowed them to? You then moan that everyone did not stand to one side and let you play through. I bet the course was full ahead of them, so even if they did stand around waiting for you to play through you would have got stuck behind the people infront.

I think the problem can be generation gaps. Young people dont see it how the older generation see it and vice versa and neither can be open minded enough to view the others point of view so this then causes conflict and so many situations. 1 bad situation leads to tarring people with the same brush whether it is noticeable or not. For example Megasteves description of the driver, "young" cock of a driver, not male brown haired stocky thin etc and then thecrawa "old" dicks description same thing as I have just written. Many people like to blame a certain party without knowing who the exact person was and realising that all people are different.

Treat people as individuals not group them all together, its one of my biggest gripes with society today, oh your brother is so much different to you and he doesnt behave like this, bloody foreigners again and why not act like this person. We are all individuals and act differently stop tarring people with the same brush, yes 1 or 2 people act like complete idiots but then for every idiot there are a 100 decent people.

i don't know the criteria of other clubs but at mine if there is a comp. in progress the course is closed to non competitors for 30 mins after the last tee,if you catch the last group up THE comp has priority of the course and i'm sorry but in this case they should not allow you through, and i'm getting fed up of people posting snide comments about senior golfers have you given a thought as to why they are the last group could it be they play slower and were put at the back so as to not slow play up in the comp.

Yet again it is another thread on slow play. It is about time this died a death like the discussions on stack and tilt, white shoes and electric trolleys being used by young fit people.

At the end of the day it annoys us all. I like you, hate ignorant golfers that jsut block hte course up and do not let anyone play through. You will not change the way these people approach the etiquette of golf. Young, old, male or female every category of golfer can be as bad as the next. Like has been commented on, young players who line up every single putt like they are on the 18th putting for a major, even though they are just having a knock round. Old people that dither up and down the fairway are just as bad. Ladies that all move round in one big huddle chatting away instead of getting to their ball as fast as possible to keep the flow of the course going.

On the other hand if you turn up at premium tee times when it is full of 4-balls of mixed age and sex then it is tough luck. You are just going to have to wait and take your turn.
