So for this winter we are looking to put in some winter tees to look for a winter read course

On some tees they will be permanently built into the end of the tee or in a flat area

Is that on all tees? Why not just use fairway mats or mats that you put down on the tee and move about?
We don’t have any mats on par 4 or 5 tees but we have driving range style tees on the par 3s.

Having those visible in summer isn’t a good look.

Fairway matts or ones you put down yourself would surely still mean foot traffic on the regular tee box and in wetter months still causing damage to the turf. Driving range style matts could work but how are they really any different from the Matt being placed here apart from it being removed in warmer months.

Don’t get why it’s not a good look. Clearly can see they’ve done some turf work around the area, once’s that’s bedded in and covering the surrounds of what’s been installed, it will just become barely visible and naturally form part of the hole that’s just used for winter. Done right it won’t be an eyesore and members will appreciate the benefits of it and won’t bat an eyelid! That’s just from my experience of playing courses that have done something similar and you don’t notice it but rather you appreciate why it’s been done surely.

If you can’t stand and swing on a tee in winter as it will get damaged, surely the coarse should be closed?
Strange comment.

They are not there because people are unable to stand or swing on the grass tee. They are there to protect the tees from divots, and just general wear a tear.

Our club installed decent ones a few years back, which are part of our measured winter course. I think they look good, and they are not in the way in the summer. They are not unsightly.

It's basically like having a "driving range" option on each hole, when weather gets bad. Also shows the club are on the ball when it comes to caring for the course whilst giving members as many opportunities to play throughout winter, without having to simply close the course

Opinions differ.

My course now has these on all 18 tees. Previously it was just the par 3's but they expanded it to all 18 this year.

Very happy with it to be honest. They moved the tees around all over last winter, we don't have a measured winter course, and we were still often churning up areas of fairway, that's where the temporary tees are placed. These will mean a perfect stance every tee shot, less mud and damage. What's not to like?

We have 10 dedicated winter tees that are rested all summer and 5 permeant mats, the remaining tees are placed at the very front of the summer tees, where nobody ever ventures during the season.

This provides us with a measured course, but nobody in their right mind would submit a GP for it.

We put 9 artificial winter tees under the old head green keeper, new guy comes in and with his daily divotting and traffic management we only use 1 - 2 of them and that's when its really wet

As the post says - on some holes

What’s wrong with them ?

It reduces traffic on the tees and when done will be dug down so they don’t encroach

Lots of clubs have them around us

Obviously not “classy” enough though

We did that a few years and the long term result was not good. They got very compacted, full of dirt and very hard to get a tee in to. We now just place the mats on existing tees and they get moved often to avoid damage to the grass, with a local rule that when mats are in use players must stand on the mat to play their shot.

The GKs will be cleaning them regularly and most are near the paths and someone for people to stand

Until they find other 'more important' stuff to do :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

We did have a period when they taken off and pressure washed each year but that did not last long.

During the covid lock down they became large weed beds.
