Garmin G3 GPS system

Anyone got one?

I see that Tesco's have it on offer for £119, which seems to be about £100 less than usual, so wondered if anyone has one and what they think of it?

Link for Tesco if anyone wants it is: http://www.tesco.com/direct/garmin-approach-g3-golf-gps-unit/208-8668.prd

I'd been looking at getting the G5 (I like the idea of one without subscriptions and would've preferred the bigger size); but I much prefer this price so I got one. Used the voucher code, but didn't seem to get anything off for been a new customer. It arrived next day (today), got some local courses on so hopefully it'll be worthwhile.

What code did you use? Think I'm going to go for one of these, was just looking at the watches but this looks like it's got a heap more features on it.

EDIT: Code I used is TDX-SKDK for anyone looking to get one. Looks an absolute steal! Thanks for posting this!

Yup, that was the code I used too.

Mine arrived today, managed to get out after work for 9 holes and it's a doddle to use, no issues at all. One unexpected feature that I think is going to be very useful is learning my yardages - on first try, some clubs are going further than I expected but others (driver) not as far as I thought.

Jezster, thanks for posting this one, great find.

No probs, happy to help.

I'll collect mine from Tesco's tomorrow. I went tonight but no bastard told me the collection section closed at 8. I got there at 8.05 and there was tumbleweed instead of people....

AAHHHH

Picked mine up this evening, looks a neat little bit of kit. Can't wait to give it a go on Sunday. One little niggle that's bugging me, I wonder if everyone else's is the same - the screen isn't crystal clear and has a sparkly effect under the screen. Not sure if this is part of the non glare or I'm just too used to an iPad/computer screen.

Thanks for this. I've been thinking about replacing my ageing Skycaddie for a while.
Plus no annual fee...whoopee.

I'll probably check the yardages against the Skycaddie for the first couple of rounds just to see how they compare.

I bought mine about 6 months ago and wouldn't be without it now. Very simple to use, 'the shot measure' button is superb and really has helped me to get used to the yardages that I am hitting , OK you have to allow for wind / local conditions but I am now far more confident that I have a better % chance of hitting a section of a green, rather than aiming for the middle as I used to do. The battery issue is spot on, don't buy cheap, a Duracell 4 pack rechargeable isn't expensive and worth every penny, I get about 2 - 3 rounds out of one set and have the second pair in the bag just in case. I have only played one course so far that wasn't preloaded (Rockliffe Hall), but I equally haven't tried the WWW. USB update function yet either. I have compared mine to Sky Caddies and the like and the yardages are spot on, but Garmin are renowned for their GPS (military and civilian) so no surprise that it is this good. The screen offers very simple info on the round, front-middle- back of green yardages, hazards and a simple hole diagram with a zoom and drag option to measure on hole yardages. If you want simple hole by hole advice, dont enter your score on the score card function and the screens will just roll over. 10/10 in my opinion, and at the prices now I might buy another and put it away!!

after collecting my g3 this morning i took it out to play a course i have never played before the g3 was a great help very easy to use.
i would be intrested to hear has anyone bought a holder for the g3 to clamp to a trolley rather than carrying the unit in your pocket.

I do, I've zip-tied this to the handle:

I got it from Amazon for about £10

Just use the clip thing they supply and attach it to your bag, or trolley. It's so easy to do and then presto, your sorted :-)
I did this too! Just use the clip to hook it to one of the other hooks on your bag. Really rugged feeling little bit of kit and a great help on the course. Really handy for me to see exactly how far I am away from the green before duffing it 50 yards into the ditch!

I used mine on Sunday its a great piece of kit, I still think it would be better if it had a clip for your trolley handlebar but for £107 its a god send. I'm going to get the bracket off Amazon for it, so I can attach it in my eyesight to the trolley. As for yardages against the Skycaddie the difference is only 2 to 3 yards, I compared it against my mates Skycaddie on several holes on Sunday.

I bought the generic bracket from American Golf for 29.99 to clip to my powakaddy handle. Really happy having it in view as I walk along, the down side is I can only have one hand on the trolley as the clamp takes up a couple of inches, no biggy though apart from uphill!.
