gaps between clubs

I think you need to review the whole line up. It has to cause you issues and you need to seriously look at the gapping in the scoring end. That's where the scores are made

youre right, I found I struggled most around the greens so I'm going to have a look at some wedges very soon. The bounce and loft is easy enough to understand but I'm bewildered by the different grinds - I don't think it'll make much difference but I could be wrong. That 3 for 2 call away deal someone mentioned looks favourite.

At the longer end I found a hybrid or 3 wood would have been useful on the par 5's for trying to get to the green in 2 but hitting a 4i just meant I was left with an 8i on the shorter par 5's or a 5/6i on the longer ones.

I honestly don't think you need a wedge for every 10 yards. You have to learn to hit half & three quarter shots. The pros will have comparatively huge distance gaps between wedges & they only carry three or four. I'd much rather carry three wedges & have room for an extra hybrid / rescue club.
Looking at your set up proves my point- you have uneven gaps with your lofts on your wedges but I suspect your distances are you even

Not the way it works for me. The 46° wedge I use for anything from 100 - 110 yards in, with the 50° used from 80 yards where I need a little more height. The 58° has 12° of bounce & I use this out of sand & for short shots where I need a lot of height. Very rarely hit this one hard, the harder I hit it the less distance it goes!

I've noticed this on wedges too, a big smack goes higher but shorter while a controlled swing goes further and lower, I very rarely hit my wedges full on.

Had a good round today, shot 89 but feel it could have been a few strokes better had there not been such a gap between some of my clubs. Mainly pitching wedge and my lob wedge, so many shots from inside 100 yards where I knew a PW was too long and the lobber too short - Sod's law that I kept hitting the PW a little too far and going off the back of the green.

Appears you missed your sand Wedge and a Gap Wedge(or approach wedge I think it is called)

I use the following (all the same set of x14 irons, so didn't worry about loft as such) and the carry distance are approx. (depending on how fast I swing them with a iron 'full swing') :-

LW 70-80 yards
SW 85-95 yards
GW 100-110 yards
PW 110-120 yards

Sounds like you need two or three new irons, unless you are going to get into 3/4 etc swings.

Hope that helps.

Ive golfed for years now but only recently got back into the swing of things and when it comes to wedges there seems to be so much to choose from in terms of loft, bounce and grind. To be honest I'm confused. Also back when I was playing regularly, hybrids didn't exist, I find that the 4 iron nowadays seems to get less distance? Or is that just me?

Where do do I start when looking into wedges and hybrids?

Any suggestions would be of great help.

Don't know much about lob wedges, as I tend to pitch and run, rather than lob. I can tell you a little about hybrids though, as I use them quite a lot. Firstly, they offer far less resistance in the rough, hence their other name "rescue clubs". Secondly, there tends to be three lofts 18/21/24, although different manufacturers may vary by a degree or so. I have all three, but can't use the 18* to save my life. The best thing is that they hit about a club further, so the 4 Hybrid for example will hit the ball as far as a 3 iron. Many people struggle to use them at first (I did) but it's worth sticking with it.

You can get every loft from 15-30 in hybrids not just the 3 you stated, and you have to hit them side by side with your irons not just assume they will go further, they don't for me.

Your not whacking them properly then !!

Thanks for all the input chaps!

i had a good look comparing wedges side by side yesterday and I like the Cleveland 588's - there seems to be buy one get one half price or buy 2 get 1 free deals on them in a few places. Are these about to be replaced? What's the deal?

buy 2 get 1 free seems to be the best deal but I can't find this offer with the bounce options - just standard bounce. Anyone know where I can get that deal but be able to select the higher bounces on a 56 and 60 degree?

Think the deal on the Cleveland wedges runs till end of June.

I have the S5 Blue Mizzy wedges which I love, the 52/7, 56/12 & 60/5 is a perfect split of loft and bounce for me, if I need to get over something high with not much green to work with or it's a bare lie, the 60/5 is ideal, the 56 is perfect for the sand with 12 bounce and the 52/7 is a great utility wedge IMO.

I was very tempted by the s5's and tried them side by side with the Clevelands. The deal on the price was the decider for me. Got them in 50/10 56/12 60/10
