GAME Golf

From having a think about it, I don't think the chip/pitch distance thing is a major problem. Game Golf hasn't been designed as a launch monitor, it's main intention isn't to provide 100% accurate statistics on purely distance, it's to track your entire game. Sure, that's one of it's features, and that particular feature has its flaws, but it's primary goal is to measure your entire game, your putts, your accuracy into the green, and find the areas that are letting you down. Despite its early flaws, I'm still very interested in getting one, and using it, as I think it could provide me with some very useful stats which I could use to improve my game. Knowing exactly how far I hit my 7 iron to within a yard isn't really going to help my game that much, and even if it did, tracking it by measuring every shot in a round with that club isn't the best way to do it. If that's your intention, and if that's what you think will help your game, go and get a lesson on a launch monitor.

I like this idea. Does it let you put more than 14 tags in play at once on the computer app?

It comes with 18 tags and you can use all of them during a round. You just rename the spare tags in the app to whatever you like, chip, pitch, bump and run etc. then tag with one of them if you are using a club to chip with. See screenshot for an example where I had tree trouble on my second shot and bumped it forward with a 6 iron.

What I like about it (though many other gizmo's may do the same thing) is that I am not good at remembering all of the holes after first time I have played a course - maybe I am just too good at putting last shot and the last hole behind me - wiping it from my memory. So I could imagine myself renting one for the day - then afterwards print out an aerial shot showing my progress around the course to be kept as a nice momento. Maybe a facility the club could offer.

I used mine in yesterdays competition, I downloaded it onto my computer this morning (which will then be accessible on my Ipad) and found that I remembered to tag 90% or my shots. I filled in the missing shots, tidied up the inaccurate drive/iron etc landing spots on the map, and confirmed the card, after which you cant make any changes. The process took 25 minutes. Tonight I will look at the stats as they will upload to the Ipad app and see how, for example, my fairways hit and gir figures look as a cumulative with previous rounds.

Its not perfect, but it is really interesting, and gives pretty accurate yardage for clubs etc and its great to see what my accuracy is from 100 yards and closer and where my misses go predominately (say long or short, left or right)

But don't you already know this sort of stuff?

I wouldn't be surprised if what we think we know about our game, is surprisingly different to what the stats show. It's easy to remember a few of the big shots that go right, but forget a load of little pulls where you miss the green left. Just where I think this system could be useful, as it makes it an easier way of taking stats. I imagine it would appeal to the sort of people who liked strokesaver (name could be wrong, but the thing that Homer recommends?). If I played more, I would be interested in these sort of stats, and if I could use a funky gadget to collect them, even better!

Interesting thread. The last time I looked at this it was £200 online and at Apple stores. The £150 price tag now is much more realistic.
I was surprised to see Mark Crossfield embrace it so much and what he has to say about it revealing things that maybe you should know but actually don't (or choose not to). For some reason I would have expected him to hate it.
I think previous posts are correct in that this isn't a device for exact distance figures for each club, but more about how you actually play and where you can improve.
Two things for me. Firstly, wearing that thing on your belt may make you look a bit of a nob, so I did think about maybe putting it on my bag if I bought one. Secondly, part of me thinks I really shouldn't buy one because It's a gadget for golf, my 2 major weaknesses and I am just the guy everyone would expect to be daft enough to be the first to get one.
I really, really hope it works though.

so I did think about maybe putting it on my bag if I bought one.

Agree with all you've said and I too thought of the bag option. However, not sure as putting stats may be an issue as I use a trolley so it is normally over by the next tee. Can tap / double tap (tripple!) tap before next hole I suppose but would this really confuse it? Chris / others - what do you think?

Not up to the gizmo to make things change I'm afraid - that's up to you :)

I'm usually a big gadget freak so this would be right up my street and I'd usually be getting a pre-order in.

But for some reason this doesn't hit the spot for me.

Most of what this can do I already know or have in other devices.

I know how far I hit my clubs, because I use a skycaddie and have been gap tested.
I get GIR\FIR\Putts etc etc from my skycaddie.
I know around the courses I play regularly where my usual miss is. From memory. (Doesn't stop me still missing there though).

It does look like a really clever bit of kit, but for me doesn't seem to do anything more than I already am able to.

Unless I'm missing something ?

I feel the same way. Thought about purchasing it but the more I read and see the more it puts me off.

If you watch Mark crossfield vlogs, his latest video shows him using it. It shows is flaws from the start to finish.

Very good point. Can't see my playing partners being too happy about putting, nip back to my bag, putting, nip back to my bag, putting...

No reason not to put it on your bag although I have it on my belt, there's no reason why you can't cover it with a t shirt or jumper though. If you tag the putts off the green you can edit them back on afterwards

The shot tracking feature was offered by Callaway with the Upro, it is a shame they dropped this as I thought it would be really useful all you were going to have to do was push a button on the unit then all your shots would be tracked on a satellite image of the course.

Gamegolf looks good to me, but I just think I would forget to tag the club in this way too often. £125 it is not too bad value but a lot to spend when I think after a month or two this is likely to sit on the For sale section.

So if you go OOB on the tee, you can quickly tag the custom cork/penalty tag, then tag your driver again. Is that something that the community have come up with or is it an official recommendation?

I was tempted to get this as a visual to map your shots on the course and thought would help. But after reading a book called Every Shot Counts by Mark Broadie on PGA Tour statistics from 2003-12 has possibly changed my mind. It looks at shots gained/lost instead of the normal stats that were used to keeping as he says it doesn't really tell you a lot. It's very in depth in the stats but an interesting insight to the millions of shots that have been crunched by the PGA and Shotlink and some surprising data. Players who have read the book have asked Broadie if he's ever approached Game Golf to incorporate their system with his insight in stats which then could be well worth getting, but he's developing an app that will be able to give you more purposeful stats.
