...forgot to mention that winning the hole goes up £1 each time if all players score the same. Meaning if say after 5 holes and all 4 players keep scoring the same and then on the 6th hole 3 players bogey and 1 player pars, that player will win £6 off each person and so on. Or worse, 1 player bogeys and the rest par. Bogey person will have to cough up £6 each.

As kids in the early 1960's we would sometimes play tanner [6d] accumulators.
We were all decent players and it was off scratch, seldom went over 4 holes without someone winning.
One night after 14 holes with no winner we all bottled out and scrapped it.

We normally put £5 with the winner getting the money, and the lowest points scorer getting their money back. But we've just introduced a twist, the lowest point scorer now has to pay DOUBLE!

It's to encourage people not to give up on their round and just go for the lowest score if they are dead.

Why was that ever the rule anyway?? Seems weird to reward the worst player over the middling players. Would make more sense for the loser to pay the winner and the mid-table guys get away with it.

Just kidding, it sounds like something I could be intrigued to do, however with smaller bets, but I think it would be hard for me to sell it to my playing partners.

The worst I've seen or heard about though in terms of gambling on the course is the "No Laying Up"-youtube channel who plays a game they call "Wolf Hammer". Just to learn the rules will take the energy from the golf.

We go the opposite and the winner buys the drinks but the loser has to do all the ordering, take the drinks around, clear away the empty tables and generally act as the winners servant (while wearing a "best bitch" rosette someone got from a dog show) and having their picture taken for our rogues gallery. Really focuses the mind when you aren't playing well as the craic is fierce and suddenly thinking a 3 footer for a point on 17 or 18 could just save you makes you really try and eek out as many points from a crap round as you can. As a rule anything around 25-27 is in danger although 29 has had it before.

My regular groups play £1 front 9, £1 back 9, £1 overall. Handicaps flex a little bit based on who's been winning, who''s struggling etc.

Works well to keep it a bit interesting.

Another group I used to play with played for heavier bets but it just caused problems as it all got a bit too serious

We have a group that puts £8 in for £2 front, back & overall with £1 NP-in-two on 9th & last. When there's a doz or more in the fiddle, a win can return a fairly hefty sum which has begun to cause some occasional rather questionable rule interpretations & conduct...… so I just keep clear & play golf simply for the pleasure of playing golf as money, sadly, always seems to bring the worst out in people.

All put in £2 and select a format to suit the numbers that turn up (usually between 8-16) Preferred is Pairs BB and then we pay winner takes all or up to three places if we get a good number to share it out. Most of the time the winners get around £5 whatever the the format is. We're mental putting all that dosh on the line

In our 4 ball we play £1 front, back and overall.
One of the other groups have the same as a betterball but individually they also play skins, ooslams, snakes and lama's. Just watching them reckon up who owes what at the end of the round gives me a headache.

So, after 53 posts I don't see any one actually gambling on the basis of the posts (pinseeker being the possible exception in principle if not detail).
I used to but stopped (part of a wider change but equally respecting all the other things referenced by upsidedown/jim8flog- ultimately it's a handicap game that relies on both accurate handicapping and absolute player integrity - nèither come easily once you move outside tight communities, and paying for serious stakes doesn't survive long in those!
I'm now happy to play for the coffee at halfway, and the end of the round, but even avoid the £/£/£ (well don't go looking for them) - if you need that to provide motivation or interest I believe you are missing the biggest part of the game.
As usual, just an opinion and not intended to be judgemental.

Just guessing here, but don’t think anyone in this thread (or somewhere else for that sake) would lose their motivation if their regular £2/£2/£2 was taken out from the round.

It’s something that gives an extra edge, nothing more, nothing less.

Gambling is so awesome. Lol, seriously, only they make me feel excitement and similar feelings. I love rooting for some team, knowing that I have put a large amount of money on it. I also love to play blackjack in a casino, for example, on one of the woo casino services and get money for winning. I've been gambling for about 10 years and have never regretted it. I really stayed in the benefits for all the time, and also got a lot of emotions and pleasure. For me, these kinds of games are a way to relax on the weekend. You should never put a casino or poker as the only source of income ( if you are not a professional player or a psychic, lol )

I'm not averse to a fiver in here and there but in general just play for a pint.

Two of my mates have been giving it big licks about one another for ages saying they'd beat the other in a match. One of them has offered to put up £50 a hole but the other hasn't bitten... yet.

Can't wait to witness that match.

When playing on of my mates recently we have been playing skins (he gets 9 shots off me) at £2 each a hole. Everything holed, no quarter given

It sounds like it's going to be costly at the start but once it all evens out its usually between £4 and £8 one owes the other. Makes it a bit interesting and it's been the best catalyst to get him off his arse and practicing.
