On the back of the questionnaire thread about gambling on the course.

How does the gambling look at your course?

Weekend swindle for me is £5 for the general pot, and then you play teams with whoever you get matched up with. £2 for the front, £2 for the back and £2 for total + £1 birdies throughout.

You pay out to everyone that beat you and collected from everyone you beat, about £4 to or from each person

Started to get too big so it's now usually
£2 front, back and game
But there's a lot of game bets here. A typical one outside the result bets is a bottle of JW if you don't win the tee for x holes with the colour of JW going up to black for a full round
I have to step back if I know the stake money isn't comfortable for me

No real "gambling" for us. Just £2 to join in the swindle - half the total being paid out as an individual winner & the other half as a team prize.

The only "betting" as such is that various individual groupings will have (usually) a £1 wager amongst themselves - eg I'm in a group of three and playing for "the £" adds just a little frisson to the day - especially if one or more of us is drawn in the same group and its close as you go up the straight. Claiming ones £ at the end of the round is nearly as good as winning tbe lottery ... (ok, perhaps not, but at least a bit more likely)

Pretty much this for me as well when used to play at my old place was a big swindle group, chuck a point in the pot best number of points wins.

Used to quite often play skins with my dad and brother as a 3 ball but not for huge amounts we're talking like 10p a hole then same again for bits and birdies just to keep it interesting. But like Bunkermagnet I've no interest in playing for a lot of money, golf is my social escape and I want to enjoy it and play for a lot doesn't interest me or make me want to play.

A couple of quid in per man is enough, it's about bragging rights for the week and taking the pi$$ out of each other. If it gets to be 'real' money it starts getting serious and people start taking each shot like Bryson.

Whoever wins pays for the drinks, so no-one really loses much, and sometimes you are better off financially by losing!

All depends on what group

Sat mornings - £2 in - split between winner and winning team , if in a fourball may have a £1 on front back and overall

Sunday - bigger swindle - £5 , possible side bets of net or gross birdies

Weekdays - £5 in plus 20p bits

£1 best score on front 9
£1 best score back 9
£1 best score overall
50p per par 3, nearest the pin.

Depending on numbers can be very profitable and can only take one shot to get your money back.

No, never. I guess in my group the rivalry of wanting to beat one another is strong enough without adding money into it. None of us have ever even suggested it. I think my game is too inconsistent to back myself anyway.

The swindle is £3 split various ways depending on format of the day.
Fourball betting is usually £2 on the match and 25p bits and birdies.

In official club comps there is very little gambling going on....at the most its a case of half a dozen blokes playing in different groups throwing in a fiver with best score taking all.

Skins games played on non comp days are different....outwith the usual skins format, the individual groups that go out will have their own side bets going on for a couple of quid each for front nine/back nine and overall...often pairing off and playing a 4BBB match at the same time as the individual skins...again the stakes are minor...£1-£2 being the norm. Occasionally four blokes 100 yards out from the green, all in similar positions, one of them will offer £1 for nearest the pin. Other than that on a general scale its very very minor.

One of the best tantrums I ever saw was during a skins game. Lets just say I was rather poor for 17 holes and relied on the other three guys to fight it out and get the obligatory halves to keep the pot rolling.

Out of nowhere on 18 I stuck a 5 iron to 18 inches and took £11 off of each of them. One person wasn't a happy camper at all. Toys right out of the pram, dummy spat you name it.

Bits are things like a sandy par or sandy birdie - we also call a birdie a bit

So normally if someone gets a “bit” everyone else gives them the agreed amount - for us it’s 20p and things double up so if it’s an Eagle it’s 40p , sandy birdie 40p

Personally would go for £2 or £3, just to make it worthwhile winning it and don't think it would put people off playing.

There's a lot of potential for this type of game if you have a good group of regular players who can agree the format and keep track of it all.

Got a mate at work and we are going to agree a game of Hammer for when it is just 2 of us playing.

Scoring is a bit like skins, where you play 50p or £1 a hole. But you can throw the hammer when a ball is in the air and double up the bet on that hole. Once you throw the hammer, the other player has it.
A half means the stake carries over, so you could be quite tactical about holding on until the pot has built up.

Also means having the honour and the hammer is very important. You don't want to be hitting 2nd when the other guy has the hammer.
At our place, there is the short 9th hole which has OB all the way down the right hand side. Very much in play, especially with the prevailing wind. You'd definitely want to be holding the Hammer on that hole.

At Dunbar on a sat as its a stableford comp £1 each for the best score among the 12 of us, winner takes all

Thanks to those who who answered my survey, very appreciated.
Glad it could also spark another thread - very helpful when it comes to placing the data into context.

Me and my mates down at uni will tend to just place the bet that 'The loser buys the beer'. Keeps us more motivated throughout the round due to the element of compitittion.
