Played today and got flippin soaked. When it started hammering it down I was not to concerned. Brolly was up, it was not windy and I had my GG Alex waterproof on. Long story short I was flippin damp as a flannel.
I walked into the 19th and asked our secretary should it be like that, he said take it to shop and they will sort it. I didn't coz I did not buy it from there. So took it to shop were it was from.
They took one look and said we will send it back to GG who will test it. What exactly do they do to test them out of interest?
One of the guys asked if I had tumble dried it. Which I told him I had. He said " that's ok coz it helps the Goretex". How's that work? It's four year old in November and looks fantastic. How do they all of a sudden stop being waterproof?
they have told me they are guaranteed for life, which I kinda knew, but how long before its tested and I hear owt?

My understanding....

They don't 'test' them so much as 'examine' them! Any holes etc, for example from the fabric being pierced by gorse (more relevant to pants) would mean the guarantee won't cover it.

Part/much of the waterproofing depends on the chemical bonding to the fabric (it apparently involves a CFC chemical, so they are trying to find other chemicals to do the job!). Tumble drying after washing reactivates that, especially if the appropriate washing/activation products are used.

Hope it works out.

I've had a GG Jacket (and pants) for over a dozen years now and it's still performing as expected! Just repaired the tears in the pants that have stopped me using them for some years and bought another jacket for 'home' use - the original is in my 'away' bag.

in my experience they will test it and then send it back saying it is fine. the next time it fails and you get wet you take a few photos and return it again they will claim it just needs reproofing. you reproof it and then it fails again they will then claim you have backed into a bush and hence its your fault it is not now waterproof. or you may be luckier with gg than i was until i kicked up a proper fuss!

I have my own washing (non bleach) liquid and always wash my GG stuff and other golfing clothes exactly as recommended and never with anything else, that way in the event of anything failing I can honestly state I've followed their care & protection to the letter.

What I found odd was that it said non bleach and fabric conditioner. Now when I read it I said " who would wash there blue coat in bleach". Missis T has just said that some wash powders ( not ours ) does have bleach in them. she occasionally does her nurse inform tops in a bleach wash.
Whats in fabric conditioner that harms GG coats though?

Certain products obviously have a negative effect on the material & protective shield, that's why I only use Silk & Wool liquid for all my golf gear.

You need to wash with non-bio powder (all we ever use) and don't use fabric conditioner.

Tumble drying is good for the water repallancy but it is not essential to maintain water proofness. When I get the time I iron mine till very hot with the same results.

I have "heard" that some of their latest products (made in the far eest!) are not as good.

Cheers KenL, the non bio washing and fabric conditioner is is but don't think I would ever dare iron it though.

Two different problems.

Fabric conditioner restricts the breathable membrane, so condensation from your body's moisture can't escape and you get damp inside. Tumble drying won't fix that, conditioners destroy the effectiveness of the membrane.

Tumble drying reactivates the water repellant coating on the outside of the material which is what you see as water beading on the surface. Over time you need to reapply the coating using products like Nikwax as it wears out.

my GG waterproof troos leaked through the pockets last year, they were sent back and immediately replaced with a new pair.

But also had a GG waterproof hat that kept leaking through the peak, that has been sent back twice and both times its come back that nothing wrong with it. so just don't use it anymore.

There have been a few GG jackets returned to our pro of late as leaking. I watched and listened to one lad returning one on Sunday. It sounded to me like the breathability (is that a word?) wasn't working. The lad complained he was wet through, but the pro said that the jacket was doing it's job externally (rain drops beading).

This is of course one of the reasons such things tend to crop up at this time of year in this weather (warm, humid and then rain...). I'm probably not alone in having had my jacket in the bag for the last 4 months either - doesn't do a lot for the breathability factor!
Personally I've not had a problem with either my CG or Pro quip jackets, but then again I don't expend sufficient energy to perspire, or even heat up, nowadays!

Do you think, just being stuck in a bag would effect the Waterproof qualities of a GG jacket?

mine has sat in the pocket for the last 3 months and not been worn once as its just been too warm to wear the odd time it has rained here.

When I bought mine it was a dual purpose coat, it was primarily for the golf but just as important, coz it is a lightweight coat it packs into the hand luggage when me an Missis T go away for our " mucky weekends". Missis T always forgets to pack her mucky. Anyway when we played yesterday it was 13.5 degrees ( car temp) on the course so not to warm. When it started raining it got a bit colder. I it was part way through the nine holer I was feeling a bit damp and I did think am I sweating. But nope.
One thing I have read which I did not think about was the coat did bead when I first got it but it has now stopped " beading".

Patrick, I don't believe it is optimum for either waterproofing or breathability; but I think the latter would suffer most. Its an inevitable situation for most in practice!
I have a GG Performance Shell that now lives in the house on a hook, is cleaned and otherwise kept happy; and works perfectly as designed. Otoh there's no doubt that there are people who have had faulty items.

its an interesting idea, but don't most of GG stuff come in and stored in a plastic bag and then a cardboard box before sale?

Big difference to being stuffed in the golf bag damp until the next time it's needed, which could be weeks or even months!
