Morning all, does anybody have the same issue as myself,I play stableford in friendlies and score ok but when it comes to comps nothing seems to go right.is it me or does anyone else also find this happens ?

You need to learn how to put a score together using your strokes. Forget about stableford and go out and try to put a good score together. That's what it's all about.

It's been happening to me a lot recently.

I've put it down to attaching too much importnace to the qualifier, trying too hard and then getting down when things go a little wrong.
Now I'm trying to play in a more "excrement happens" type of mind set, if I hit a bad shot just play on, it's definitely helping the scoring.

not me - I can't score in friendly games either at the moment.....

Relax and don't put any pressure on yourself. Don't count your points on the way roun either, then it can get in your head and you can start getting desperate. It'll come, my first Stableford was 22pts, then four comps later, 45! However, I then went and shot 29pts yesterday so what do I know!

Most of us have issues once we get a comp card in hand, added pressure and expectation.
Once you relax and treat it as just another game scores will come, frustrating as it is just keep plugging away.

I know your pain steve. I break 90 just about everytime i go out with mates, but come comp day and i've yet to break 100. :o

Steve, I know exactly what you mean. As others have said i just try and go out there and not worry about it. I also try to play with mates off the competition tees just to get used to the additional length which on some holes is 50 yards

Stick with it, we'll all get there

The only way to do that is to play more, get experience and learn. Soon you will realise a blob, 8 or a bad shot isnt going to kill a medal/stableford round.

n just three years of golf I have seen medals won with a 10 on a card, more than plenty won with 7s and 8s on them. I have seen stablefords won with two or three blobs.

I like the new thing I am doing, breaking the round down into sets of 3, two bogeys and a par is my aim. I then focus on each shot at a time and when a new 3 hole set begins I can start afresh and forget about the good/bad last 3 holes I have had (to remove the pressure).

Apart from the psychologcal element of playing with a card in your hand (which is significant) I find often the course will usually be set up to be a bit more difiicult in a comp. The tees are moved back to the markers, the greens are a bit faster and the pins are often tucked away in corners or located on slopes. Can just cause shots to leak away and add to the pressure and frustration.
