Free Relief?

It would appear a few things are, especially a very subtle change like that.

Happy to say that in the limited golf that I played last year, and obviously the shortened season I've played this year, much of which has been preferred lies, not one single person has ever mentioned it and this is the first I've heard of it. That is within a variety of golfing environments, club matches, County tournaments etc etc in several different parts of the country, so it's not just an old fourball who don't pay any attention.

We also regularly see the pros on the European Tour, LPGA and PGA Tour using their tee to mark when Preferred Lies are in operation, and as someone who watches loads of the coverage, I've never heard it mentioned.

If lots of people aren't aware of something like this, it's not a coincidence.

You can even swap for a differnt ball if you want!

I put than one to use in an unusual situation this year. One of mates had put his drive in to woods with no 2nd ball in his pocket and his bag 100 yards away. I gave him my second ball to hit off the tee and got it back from him during the lift clean and place procedure.

I hope you made him sign for it before he hit it :ROFLMAO:

Although there's no compulsion to mark a ball I still do it. If the rule says I have to replace within six inches I want to know that I've done so; and I don't want there to be any doubt in my opponent's mind either.
