Guys,

I've been reading some forums\books where a forward press is suggested to start the putting stroke.

Who here incorporates this in their putting swing, and why?

I tried it but I got very inconsistent results (maybe due to the loft of my putter), plus, I don't noticeably see many pros doing it apart from Big Phil.

Not for me. I have tried it, but putter comes up too much, and i prefer to keep it as low as possible. Would rather hit the putt on the up, rather than hit down on it.

I've done it for years, it's very subtle though.

Do it for chipping too and been toying with incorporating it into my full swing but not committed to it yet.

I find it helps me keep my putting stroke solid and it's a great trigger for the stroke when under pressure. Just be careful not to let it change the clubface alignment.

Doesn't seem to help Phil Mick much, as to me, he misses way too many makeable putts. Not someone whose putting stroke is one to copy.

I don't like the forward press because it can alter face alignment and delofts the blade as a starting point.

I had a playing lesson about 4 months ago, when we were on the green the pro noticed I was leaving putts short. Reason being my hands were slightly behind the putter head meaning I could not finish the stroke properly, he suggested that I change my set up to have my hands in front or have the press like lefty. It felt more comfortable to me to do it the second way and I find it really helps me.

ive tried it but i did not feel comfortable with it. the results were just the same as my normal stroke which i feel a lot more comfortable with.

I use it all the time but it’s hard to notice. The advantage for me is it starts the procedure off without any jerky movements, it helps stop my wrists breaking down during the stroke and it helps me take the putter away with my shoulders and not my hands.

I use it on my putting stroke only. Helps to get the putter away on line with out snatching at it. Also feel it helps me find rythem in the stroke to. I still hit on the upswing, NO ONE should ever put on the downswing, that would be a flaw in the stroke!
