Forum distance versus real distance?

As the two above a really good drive for me will occasionally threathen 260 but for the most part 230-240 sees me happy.
Not a big hitter by any means. I did once hit a drive over the 300 mark but there were so many variable factors that I will probably never get them all in alignment to do it again :D

Greig you must have hit that 5 wood close on 300 yards down the 18th yesterday....

shame you knobed the 2nd into the burn;)

I love this topic and think it is funny that a lot of golfers think that distance off the tee is directly related to the size of their penis and the sign of a better golfer.
If that was the case, Jamie Sadlowski would walk on three legs and would win every golf tournament EVER!

My distances are typically;
Driver - up to 290 unless assisted by wind or a downhill fairway
3 wood - up to 250
3 hybrid - 200 (flies high, lands soft)
4 iron - 200
5 iron - 185
6 iron - 165
7 iron - 150/155
8 iron - 140
9 iron - 130
PW - 110
52 deg - 90
56 deg - 85
60 deg - 65

I'm sure I could hit it further if I swung like a mad man but I would rather be in the fairway with a good angle in to the green.
I think it helps being confident with a 4 iron as well.

For forum yards, is there a science to it? or do I just say whatever distance I think will impress people?
If there is a science, maybe just add 20% to all my distances above - that would mean I drive the ball 350 - yeah, I like that.

i'm weary posting distances as unless you say you don't hit it far you get flamed, and its a moot point, the score counts.

having said that i'd class myself as medium too long, have had my club head speed checked a few times at around the 105 mph mark which ties in to what i think my average is of around 240-50 yards.

On the course i'll hit a couple per round approaching 300 yards, (bearing in my mind i play on a links course with lots of roll)
i'll also have a few around the 200 mark from mis-hits hitting into the wind etc.

I hit it miles further in real life that I say on the forum. I just shorten them on here so the rest of you don't feel ashamed!

If I wind one up and catch it right, I know I can break 300yds, only issue is, out of say 25 attempts I'd only hit the fair once or twice.

So realistically, I'm probably around the 250-275yds mark.

That written, last time on the course I got one up the middle of the fairway, up hill then falt, a slight tail wind, hardfair way and a distance of around 310yds.

What about if you go to the million dollar hole in South Africa,http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2009/04/24/1240079796687.html 430metres up or 470yds in old money, does that count for a long drive?

On a dead calm day, if I really nailed a drive I would probably max out just short of 270. Average is probably 250 - 260. I probably hit a decent 7i about 145. Not spectacular.

However, I rarely play in dead calm conditions and, with two exceptions, our place either plays into the prevailing wind or downwind, so I rarely play the club the yardage would suggest. I've hit PW from 140 yds and I've hit 5i from 130 yds. I've seen too many guys come up short because they can't bring themselves to club up into a breeze.

It's been awhile since the last 'whap it out on the table' thread.........

unless it's exceptional circumstances we are all similar lengths (ball distances nobby)

I absolutely smoked one on Sunday. Lovely soft draw, wind behind and a big healthy bounce on the fairway. GPS measured 287 yards. Second shot hit 4 iron beautiful crisp strike, gentle fade, healthy kick onto the green and a nice roll out. GPS measured 234 yards.

I think you are getting yourself confused with Justin Rose at the 18th at Merion

Its all bit random, 270yd drives and 145yd 7i suggests something is not right, if you extrapolate necessary club head speed to generate 270yds ( let's say 250 carry + 20yds of roll) and then work it down I am sure the 7i would be longer ..
Honestly speaking its difficult to actually gauge true distances, machines calculating flights are making some whopping assumptions ( you also need to know the setting put in by the operator). When you measure on course you have to accept that the conditions have an affect. Ideally you want to hit on a calm day and measure your carry only, roll is a huge variable (it can be maximised) but very dependant on course conditions.
Now here is a forum distance, the machine I was on the other day suggested I could if I released properly hit a 7i out to 180yds with a head speed of 82-84mph, reality is 20-30yds shorter :(
my distances are
Driver 220- 240yds carry
4 wood 210-230yds carry
3i hybrid 190-210yds carry
4i 170-180 carry
5i 160-170 carry
6i 150-160 carry
7i 140-150 carry
8i 130-140 carry
9i 120-130 carry
PW 110-120 carry
52wedge 100 carry
56 wedge ??
60 wedge 60-70 carry ( never really hit it like that, can skull it to 150yds though :) )
putter 40 ft any further and I will chip :) !
These are all still day numbers.

I am looking for some help folks and a bit of a quick fix. I played 2 rounds at the weekend and was finding for some reason all my drives were going way right and i mean miles right. Only when im on the tee though, all my iron shots are fine. I am losing balls, shots and patience, anyone know what i might be doing wrong?

cheers

Asking a very vaugue question in a thread that has nothing to do with it? ;-)

What ever I have said is what I hit, what I don't do is say my longest drive of 310 yards is my average. I actually underestermated my average driving distance during the winter. My driving distance ranges from 250-270 with a good few 280-290's thrown in.

My 7 iron is my 165-170 yard club but I've had a few freaks travel 190-200. I would hope to have some distance though as I work hard in the gym all week strength training.

All measured with my S3...
