Forgiving forged compact irons

With some of the choices about here I do wonder what people thoughts are on forgiveness.

Is it just the feel of the iron on off centre hits, or the distance they travel? In that respect the only club that has given my the 'distance' of forgiveness is the TM RSi irons.

I agree with Ethan that a forged head doesn't feel that much different in some of the better cast heads these days.

Loss of distance on off centre hits, less loss = more forgiving, on the A12 pros I reckon catching it right out the toe lost no more than 5 yards maybe 10 max, that's not bad at all for a bad swing.

thin blade offcentre hit results in usually being way short to a green/in a bunker etc.
forgiving iron could mean reaching the green/saving strokes.

Some of todays cast clubs like the Ping i20's I agree dont feel as different to a forged iron, however, you really know when you play a forged iron over a cast.

To me irons fall into 4 different categories now:

Beginer: big chunky looking irons, lots of forgiveness plenty of offset and high launch characteristics. Like the JPX-EZ

GI: Smaller head, but still with a thick top line, high forgiveness, often with a progressive offset, mid-high launch. Like the MP-H5

Players Cavity: Compact head, thin top line, some forgiveness, minimal offset, low-mid launch. Like the MP-15

Blades: Small head, thin top line, no forgiveness, no offset, low launch. Like the MP-4.

I don't really know of any clubs that cross those borders, so you have to make the choice. Is it the forgiveness of a GI iron with a bigger head, or do you want the compact players iron that makes you give up the forgiveness.

I think there's either another category or a spread of 'forgiveness' between 'Players Cavity' and 'Blades'.

Some Mizunos are typical of those that fit 'in between' - definitely not blades, but also not really Cavities either.

And you haven't catered for Combo sets either!

Btw. Blades can certainly have offset. And I had some CBs that had very little offset.
