For those that know their distances and use GPS.....

As a general rule I take middle of the green reading unless I am under 100 yards and therefore in wedge range, then I like to kid myself that I need exact yardage to pin / landing location. At my home course long is often dead so only really look at a back of the green reading if it is a really big green, the pin is at the back and I know there is room.

Sort of seems to work for me although looking at my stats over the year my GIR is a shocking @ 20%, majority being a two way left and right green high misses rather than short and never long. Not sure good distance control 20 yards right / left of target counts as on the angle the balls probably flown further than intended? If I ever start hitting my irons straight this logic may change or at least the iron I then select

Tend to club to the middle of the green. With smallish greens it is never going to miles away. Of course if the greens are firm and there is trouble behind I'll aim more to the front. As a lot of the trouble is at the front of greens, taking enough club to hit the middle should allow for a smooth swing and a slightly poorer hit still has the chance to carry the trouble find the front edge

If you have 150yd markers to the middle and you are next to one, you are probably about 165 to the back (on a 30yd green).
Add to that the average golfer doesn't hit every shot perfectly......
Add to that most trouble around the greens is at the front........
Assuming a pin in the middle ish of the green, a wise golfer would select a club suitable for 160yd.

If you're not sure, count how many times you came up short in your last few rounds compared to how many times you went through the back

I have been wondering about that. So the yardage markers in Britain usually refer to the middle of the green? Because in Germany (apart from being in meters, of course) they tend to give the distance to the very front of the green (and when I compare them with my Garmin watch, they are a bit short of the number the watch gives, so I guess the markers refer more to the beginning of the foundation for the green, so the front fringe if you want). Same goes for distances given on sprinklerheads.

The markers at my club are to the front of the green. My old club and most of the other clubs I have played, they are all to the middle. I find the same, no idea how they were measured!
