As a general rule I take middle of the green reading unless I am under 100 yards and therefore in wedge range, then I like to kid myself that I need exact yardage to pin / landing location. At my home course long is often dead so only really look at a back of the green reading if it is a really big green, the pin is at the back and I know there is room.
Sort of seems to work for me although looking at my stats over the year my GIR is a shocking @ 20%, majority being a two way left and right green high misses rather than short and never long. Not sure good distance control 20 yards right / left of target counts as on the angle the balls probably flown further than intended? If I ever start hitting my irons straight this logic may change or at least the iron I then select
