Lived near plenty of air force bases in my life from the '70s onwards....there's nothing like a pilot in a Phantom pointing the planes nose to the sky and hitting the afterburners when you are pretty much directly below.
They were good carrier sea planes. Replaced the Buccaneer which was a lovely aircraft.Oh, yes there is! The English Electric Lightning.??
But , yes, thevPhantom is awesome. Saw one taking off from airfield I was stood nearby at the end of runway. He nearly didn't get up and away and was not very high over me.
His navigator bailed whilst still over runway.!! Seems the pilot had a mechanical problem and didn't think he'd make it off the deck.
Worked Buccaneers for three years. Good electrical system with easy to identify cables, extremely reliable engines and nightmare hydraulic systems. Generally good detachments including Flags at Nellis. They were good carrier sea planes. Replaced the Buccaneer which was a lovely aircraft.
Definitely one for the adrenaline junkies - and I have, in past times, been prepared to be one of those, if not via flying jets! The BAE Lightning could climb faster than a Phantom.
Was that Red and Greens. That must have been a good experience.Worked Buccaneers for three years. Good electrical system with easy to identify cables, extremely reliable engines and nightmare hydraulic systems. Generally good detachments including Flags at Nellis.
Red with Buccs , did Red and Green with Harrier. Was that Red and Greens. That must have been a good experience.
Helped build her in the later 1960s. When I consider what a great plane it was and the kind of technology available back then it was such a great achievement. Her last visit to the City that made her.
