flattish course in Edinburgh or surrounding area

bathgate g.c. home of 2 ryder cup captains . not that scenic but usually in good nick and a good test and friendly. buggies for rent but not needed as its quite flat

Up that way you really should play links courses.

Craigielaw, Kilspinie, Gullane 2, Dunbar are probably the best value courses - in order of distance from Edinburgh. G2 isn't really hilly, though 3 and 17 are severely up.down resp.

Mortonhall and Longniddry would be my recommendation for flattish non-links courses. Duddingston pretty good and close to city, but not quite up to the the standard of the other 2 imo.

And if you can live with hilly, The Braids is truly unique - and has some of the best views of 'Auld Reekie' - though Craigielaw gets my vote for best variety of scenery.

Fantastic part of the world for golf!

I'd class Longniddry as links in style. Certainly more links than parkland! A few holes snake through trees but overall in my opinion its very much a links track!

I can understand why you do - but I don't. The 'soil' is sandy, but that's as far as it goes imo. Maybe if it was on the other side of the road?

The card says there are no par 5s on it either, but I disagree with that too.:D Fond memories of the 13th though - and it only cost me 2 beers!:D

I have a personal hatred of Mortonhall, something to do with my being gash whenever I'm there.I'd class it as hilly, though, it's on the same hill as the braids!

Personal suggestion within Edina would be duddy, outside, gullane.

Oops! I meant to type 'Monktonhall' which is the (James Braid) course, with the Art Deco clubhouse, in Musselburgh. :o

Mortonhall(another James Braid design) is indeed hilly - and not cheap? First place I broke 80 - with the haar at ceiling level! Watch out for the local ball thieves on the serpentine-ish par 5 (4)! And I seem to remember a heart-attack hill (5?).

aka The Musselburgh Golf Club (apparently the club became too posh for Monktonhall after being picked by the R&A for Qualifying and promptly changed the name)

heart attack hill would be 18 & always into the wind
you'll enjoy the course - it always gives you a chance
