First official handicap!!!

Well done !

You'll probably only come down in Club Medals or Stableford qualifying comps, and then by 0.3 per shot under I think, and you'll only ever go up by 0.1 anyway.

15 will concentrate your mind now !!

Yeah, 15 is div 3, so you will come down at 0.3 per shot below standard scratch, and when you make a pigs ear of it, you will just go up by 0.1 total.

Good luck. Remember it only takes one good round to get cut but a lot of heartache and 0.1's to get it back. Great when you're on form not so good when you can't keep it in the same county.

Welcome to the weird and whacky world of handicaps and I hope you get to where you want to be soon

Your handicap cuts relate to which category of golfer you are :-

cat1 (5.4 and below)..= cut by 0.1 per stroke under CSS
cat2 (5.5 to 12.4)......= cut by 0.2 --------"------------
cat3 (12.5 to 20.4)....= cut by 0.3 --------"------------
cat4 (20.5 to 28).......= cut by 0.4 --------"------------

Each category has a buffer zone where you do not get a handicap increase if you are over the CSS. These are :-

cat1 has 1 stroke buffer
cat2 has 2 stroke buffer
cat3 has 3 stroke buffer
cat4 has 4 stroke buffer

You can only ever go up by 0.1 strokes per round no matter how many strokes you are over your buffer zone

For example if Keef off 15 handicap (cat3) were to shoot a gross 88 nett 73 with a CSS of 72 he would stay exactly the same as he's hit his 3 shot buffer zone

Good luck KeefG, its harder than it looks.

Homer
About keeping it in the same County, very difficult at The Kent & Surrey where on some holes you drive of in Kent and hopefully find your ball in Surrey, and visa versa.
Its when you drive off in Kent and still find your ball in the same County when it should be Surrey that really upsets people, its only a drive (straight) of 210 yards.

Just been down to my club and picked up my first ever handicap certificate and i've been given 15!! :D

Quick question, what are the rules on how handicaps are cut etc?

Good going Keef!

Getting cut is a simple bit of maths. For every shot under the 15 (taking into account the CSS for the day) you will get 0.3 off your h'cap down to 12 (i.i.r.c) then it's 0.2

So, let's say, you play 13 over par (gross) and the CSS is the same as the par for the tees used, you will get 0.3 x 2 shots = 0.6 off your 15, so you'd then be off 14.4

If you did it again, you'd only get one 0.3 off (because you'd be off 14 already), so you'd then be on 14.1

Better not to think about it and let the computer/secretary do it.

The CSS moves up and down at mine, so I don't second guess a cut, I just check the h'cap board before I go out next time.

Good stuff mate. Your the same handicap as me, however, the way im played today ill be back to 16 by 15:00 tomorrow.

Trust me, next stableford comp you will get to the tee after the stroke 16, mark your card and go "that's a 5 for 2......oh b****cks!!"

Well done.
