Just submitted my first of 3 handicap cards. The course is a par 72 SSS70 and I scored 100. I had 4 holes where I scored above double bogey (2*3 bogey, 1*4 bogey and 1 * 5 bogey). Therefore am I correct in calculating my net score for handicap purposes as 100 - 7 shots = 93 = 23 handicap?

Par
1 4 6
2 4 7
3 4 5
4 4 6
5 3 3
6 5 8
7 5 7
8 3 3
9 4 5
10 4 4
11 4 8
12 4 3
13 4 5
14 3 4
15 5 6
16 5 10 (woops)
17 3 4
18 4 6

With handle bars like that I'm sure the secretary will give you what ever H/C you want!!

The calculations look right to me though. I would think the new h/c would be based on the SSS but you might find they base it on par. Interested to find out.

3 pars and a birdie on the card? I'd give you 17 or so. Might take a while to get used to playing to it, but the handicap secretary won't give you above 20 for fear of you shooting 12 over in your first round - those scores indicate you can break 90 fairly soon.

Ignore the bad holes, remember the positives - thats good shooting, well done!

Congratulations on your score, forgive my ignorance, but do you have to score in competitions for a handicap to be awarded or can it be in an ordinary round? Also does it have to be a club member who witnesses the round etc? What are the rules regarding achieving a handicap?

I was always under the impression it was 3 ordinary round signed by a member at the club who either played the round with you or just walked around with you - once you have handed in 3 cards and handicap given, it only goes up/down in competitions.....

Am I along the right lines?

Thanks for all the positive comments. I was playing with three people I hadn't met before so was a bit nervous, but was very pleased with how it went. I am doing my other two cards on Thursday and Friday and hope to shoot mid 90's.
I was playing off an unofficial handicap of 28 last season with my locals golf society and won the order of merit so they reduced it to 26.
I am however taking lessons once a month and feel my game is really progressing and would be happy with anything less than 26.
