First Eagle – Hever Castle

Next challenge then is a 2 putt birdie on 17 from the 'Europro tee' in the summer ! I've been on in 2 twice in competition, and 3 putted on both occasions trying to force an eagle.

Talk me through that one Duncan....I've been a member at Hever for a few weeks now and 17 has played between 570 and 640 yards each time, the best I've been left with is a PW in for my 3rd shot. The tee shot is a tight one to feed it through past the pond..... I'd LOVE to see someone hit that green in 2.

It's always an excellent drive on that hole to give yourself a reasonable 2nd to the green - well done.

Me and another guy went driver, driver on that hole for a bit of fun. Ended up with a par. was pretty happy with that.

Firstly the conditions right now aren't conducive, and the tee is more often down the bottom. However, a third shot pw is already pretty impressive, and most members will never manage that from any tee in any conditions.

From the raised 'Europro tee' (the story is a laugh in itself) you simply launch one over the left/top edge of the left oak - direct target is the right edge of the small group of trees to the right of the lefthand water hazard. ...leaves about 270 into the green. With a bit of roll and, like the 10th, you need to land the ball before the up slope to the green (although obviously if you are up for this you will be pitching the 10th with a very shot iron for your second!)

it's been driver/hybrid/hydrid then wedge so far for me in my fledgling Hever career.

is it right that they built the europro tee to encourage them to go for the green in two but that they all ended up hitting 7 irons through the gap in the fairway ?

when i have played it its been driver ,driver ,three wood ,five iron. ,obviously im not hitting forum distances ,but i dont think i have ever played the 17th wind assisted .
i have hit the 7th in two once. i thought that was impressive.

From the raised 'Europro tee'

I didn't know that was the Europro tee....I just assumed that's where the yellows would go more often than not with the whites then blues down the bottom. I'd love to play from that tee each time!

I'd be surprised if that is the reason...I'm not a huge hitter by forum standards but from the raised tee its a pretty straight forward shot to go past the pond.

I've been on 17th three times in 3 shots off the whites.... It's always driver/hybrid.....then I've hit anything from a PW to another hybrid to get on depending on the wind!

Being on 7 in 2 is no easy task, I always seem to lay up to the right of the oak tree for my 3rd.

They have a requirement that all holes must be reachable in 2 strokes in neutral conditions when they hold their events - so we had to build that tee...they also used pin positions that were somewhat easier on average than we use! They like low scoring stats from their players.

There were a mix of plays, as there are when the club uses that tee. However, in general as long as the wind wasn't hurting they can hit the widest part of the fairway with a driver pretty easily (the risk was the long rough to the left towards the 9th tee - we now have a very different mowing pattern along there than in those days). They don't hit driver on many holes to be honest - they are playing 15 with 3w / short iron as an example. 9 & 10 were the only ones that were consistently driver.

I hope you are enjoying the course and will no doubt see you around.
