That other thread got me thinking.
Mine was a Raleigh Striker with the brake when you back pedalled. I was a demon at skidding on it.
I inherited my brothers Grifter a year or so later, red, yellow and blue gears wasn't it?
Weighed a ton but was awesome.

I was 13 before I had a new bike, Dawes with (I think) 5 speed de railleur gears.

Until then it had had to be secondhand specials passed on from my elder brother who, being the practical one, had built them up.

It was a trike with a proper boot on the back. It was my 4th Christmas. Back then we didn't have a load of money. It was second hand, and gloss painted white by my dad using left over paint in the garage.

The first that I can remember was a Raleigh Tomahawk

The second was a blue Grifter.

Aren't they just variations of the late 60's Mk1 Raleigh Chopper (which I think was my first), which if you come across in original & half decent condition can fetch £300-£500 now!

First bike was an old 3 wheeler, then a 20" wheel boys bike, single speed with stirrup brakes. Next was a second hand Vindec, then a new Peugeot racing bike with 10 gears. The next bike was quite a few years later and was an Orange Clockwork, which has done many miles and is still in my garage.

Remember my older sister had a Raleigh Chipper before she upgraded to the Chopper.
That Chopper was a health and safety nightmare, the gear lever was between the legs and the front end used to tip up.

Ho, ho great times from the 70's

Ah - I forgot that I had one of these How could I. One day as I belted along the pavement from the shops the brakes (which were only on the front wheel) got tangled and the wheel stopped dead - the bike tipped up and I went flying over the handlebars and whacked my face on the ground. It's never been the same since - and neither have my front teeth.
