Despite being on the forum for quite a while I finally bought a copy of Golf Monthly this month. FI I started playing again 6 months ago.

Go on you can call me tight a*s* but really I am wary of magazines because I think the tech stuff can really ruin your game and the kit reviews can have you believing the new bling is a must have if you want to be a good golfer.

Don't know about anybody else but I hate golf magazines where the articles are written by super tech high flying "experts" much prefer knowing you are as good or bad as the rest of us or crap as in my case.

Anyway I was really pleased with the mixture in the mag course reviews, equipment, pro talk, game review where the GM staff got beat  and of course the dreaded tech stuff, Mr Kim with his chocked down grip, shortened backswing, holding his hips back, gripping the ground like limpet - see what I mean.

I think I will deffo be buying it in the future though and the ear to the ground attitude from Golf Monthly which I think the forum gives to you is spot on. Homers new role is a good example - congrats mate.

Well done GM ( and no I'm not after a job with GM before anyone accuses me of grovelling) :D

I agree, as someone who's new to the sport all the technical advice can get confusing especially as you don’t know what is good or bad. I'm just glad I did the right thing and got lessons from a pro first.

I must admit out of the magazines I’ve tried I do find Golf Monthly has about the right mix of articles and tips and no I’m not after a free subscription …… but if one was to be offered

good to have you on board as a reader as well as a forumer - as for free balls why not take up the subscription offer in the issue you bought - it basically ammounts to a free dozen top notch balls

The great thing with the mag (and not because I'm now affiliated) is that it is continuously evolving. I know there are a few changes planned which having seen them laid out yesterday make sense and will give the magazine a frsher look and feel.

To be honest I don't think they overdo the technical or equipment sections and that the depth of coverage they give is just about right without being overly complicated or in the case of equipment, too in your face and promotional.

If you are thinking about getting a subscription now would be a good time. It takes about 6 weeks for the subscription to be activated so you wil be just in time for either the England vs Scotland review or the Royal Ascot day. Have a look online or in the latest edition to see what offer is on for new subscriptions

Must say having to wait 6 weeks is an awfull long time. I subscribed at the begining of January, and the trouble is I now can't buy GM because I don't know what month will be my first subscription copy. Now I know it's not going to be January, I will have to try and find a copy in the newagents. I might even have the same trouble next month.

I recieved a letter from mike asking me if I would like to extend my subscription......Wouldn't this letter be better sent after I've recieved a couple of copies?

Yes did walk into that one. Would probably subscribe but the 6 months puts me off.

Mike it's probably been asked before but why does it take so long?

Possibly TG but don't forget your crayons to colour in the pictures!

I don't know what the reason behind the delay is but I assume it includes things like setting up DD's where necessary, waiting for payments to clear, getting the gifts ordered and the fact that contrary to my pre-conceptions it is actually a fairly small group involved in everything to do with the mag so there amy be other roles to be fulfilled s well. If you need a definitive answer as opposed to my speculation why not PM Mike (although he is pretty tied up with deadlines this week)

We had a monthly yachting mag working in the offices below ours. It's amazing how few staff are involved in the publication of our monthly favourites. As I suspected, GM appears no different. These aren't 'glam' jobs, despite what we may think, I should know I've done a few in my time.

Generaly speaking the more glam a job appears, the less glam it actually is.

As I mentioned in another thread. The GM team should be congratulated on 'moving with the times', I hope it proves popular with the general readership who don't frequent this forum.

Mike - what about us who are loyal to our newsagents? I stopped buying ciggies off him, have now stopped buying the ciggie-substitute sweets - just can't do the dirty on him & stop buying the mag as well. I know a sub works out cheaper and you get the free balls, but the poor soul has to have something to sell. So, a free ball in every mag next time round ?? :D

sadly we got stopped putting a ball as a gift on the cover a few years back - taking up too much space apparently!
