well, played my last round today......
first 2 holes were a good start!! a bogey for 5 and a par for 4!!! THEN......teed it up for the 3rd( S/I 3) and topped it so it bobbled 20 yards to the left, couldnt play the shot, so took another off the tee, good drive considering.....ended up with a 7. hit an 8 on the par 5 6th. then made quite a few double bogeys......got to the par 3 11, hit 6!!! seemed lie i was playing tennis with myself over the green with my 52* wedge!! few more d.bogeys......
by this point, lost confidence in my driver, slice starts to become worse and worse as im not turning my shoulders through the swing!! so get to the 16th (S/I 10, 368yds) pull out the 4 iron, and slice this to within 2 yards of being OOBs! hit a 7!! so, get to the 17th, use the 4 iron again, tee off a bit close to the OOB wall than i liked, 2nd, take an 8 iron, going for the green going over the wall SLICE!!OOB!!! take another shot......ended up hitting 7!
get to the 18th, pull out the driver to redeem myself, by the time its my turn to shoot and crowd of about 10 people are watching us as they had to replay the final hole in a sudden death match (squared the comp they had been playing) BOOM!!! straight as you like about 275 yards carry, still hit a d.bogey, but was happy with the drive!
ended up shooting 106.......so got a handicap of 27 so the m/cap sect told me in his office after!
oh well, onwards and upwards! i know i can shoot under 100 as have done in practice, just need it all to come together in one round for once!!!

It is a different game in a comp or marking a handicap card. The good news is does get marginally easier in time. I think the thing that really stands out here is how your swing tightened when you were under pressure and how you need to think about course management and find a way of keeping it in play. Stick with it. It will fall into place

It does get easier as Homer says, the only way to et used to the pressure of comps is to play in them.

You've got your handicap now, good luck for the season and enjoy trying to improve it - any goals for the season?

goals- shoot under 95, that may seem ambitious however i have already hit 99, so i think if i can control my putting to limit my 3+ putts i should get close.
also, practice my swing, improve my driver work and compete in a few comps.

Good work, sounds like you know where to improve so keep at it.

I'm waiting to find out my HC, 3 cards went in Tuesday.

The best thing you can work on is short game, especially putting. I always land a good 20 foot short of the hole and try to aim for no more than 2 putts, 1st putt to get close, within 5 foot, then roll the second in.

The way I see it at this stage with a high handicap you can sacrifice the long clubs off the tee if your nervous, with shorter clubs to get consistency, a bogey is a good score and can relieve the pressure of a mammoth straight drive.

Keep on trucking!

all i say is i wish i hadnt asked for my score after the front 9, i nave have done before, but i did this time! id hit 51 going out and it was in my head that i could get 100 or less, but hitting it OOBs and a few silly chips that were too hard/sort let me down. but at least i know i have the game to reach that score and i will only get better. the guys at the club say my h/cap will drop pretty quickly, i have the shots in my bag, just need to hit it like i can most if not everytime, rather than what im doing now.

Having a card in your hand takes a lot of getting used to.

Firstly, you're just plain nervous about the whole thing.

The next stage is you have a decent start, tighten up and it all blows up.

Then it's a decent round and you're on the home stretch, get nervous and it all goes pear-shaped.

You start to find a way to cope with each of the situations whether it be some way of relaxing or some method of course management that will get you home.

It's never easy though.

Shooting under 95 is not over ambitious. If you think about it, it's only a few more putts dropped or a couple less OOBs. This time last year I couldn't break 100 and now I'm regularly shooting 90-95 (of course, there are the odd horror rounds too!) I have even shot about 4 or 5 rounds in the 80s.

I think it's just a case of believing it's in there and being patient. :)

Why does the HC Cards add more pressure than any other card. When i joined my place i was on a good run and my rough hc was between 10/11. i was shooting this on pretty much any course i played around that period, yet my HC rounds were +18, +16, +15.

elliottlale , I wouldnt worry fella, your have that dreaded number now, so time to get out with less pressure, settle down and get them cuts in., ;)

It's actually quite frustrating for me reading all these posts about people handing in Handicap cards as I still can't. My course is still using winter tees which I cannot use for handicap purposes. Hopefully this Sunday and we will be back on normal tees. My recent rounds would suggest a handicap of 23/24. Not really much difference round my place between winters and regular tees. A couple of holes will be lengthened then there are a couple which are actually longer off the winters. So it will be interesting to see if when playing handicap cards my game goes off.

Was the handicap round played of the competition tees? and the 95 ot the general (yellow)? If so the length of the course could be the difference.

Also agree with previous posters, having a practise round always seems easier then when a card is in your hand.

Submitted my three cards recently 100 110 & 103 and got a handicap of 27.

Played badly in my first medal hitting 105 on Saturday.
Came second in a 9 hole stableford yesterday with 20 points having 3 putted 4 holes, but generally happy with my play.

Firly confident I can start getting the handicap reduced.

Good stuff chap, sounds like you're a few yips away from chomping into that handicap. As you say, one day one things great and another costs you, and the next day they swap places! Looking forward to putting it all together myself :)As a point of interest do you have to get your handicap of the comp tees?! No one said this to me at the club, or are yellows fine?

We only have white and red tees. Therefore all the male handicaps are from the competition tees. My wife is putting her first card in Sunday. She hit her best score on 9 holes on Tues (48 par 36 SSS 35). Luckily I hit 46!

no, all off the comp tees (whites), as i see it, there is no point in starting on the reds and moving back.......il just learn to play from the whites and then i have a clear indication how im really doing

ok, obviously im no seasoned vetran BUT, i was told you can play off the whites or the yellows but you have to clearly highlight which on your scorecard as the stroke index could be different and the handicap will differ (i think thats right!)

I agree completely but I'm pretty sure there's some rule at our club saying you can't play off white tees unless in a comp, but would that be over-ridden by the fact that you're getting a handicap?

I was asking the question as we have a ruling at our club, whites for competitions and handicap cards, yellow general play and reds for the ladies. Well done for doing your bit from the whites.

That would make sense! Cheers, will ask at my club to speak to someone on the handicap committee before I start handing cards in, think that's the safest option!
