Well, I am one of the few people to have had the pleasure of flying with Colin. What a pilot, he had amazing skills, way beyond your normal commercial pilot.

Sorry to disagree, but the way that helicopter was being flown prior to the accident was way beyond the performance envelope. A commercial pilot would never flown like that if he wanted to keep his licence.
There is an old saying in aviation... "there are old pilots and bold pilots, but you never get an old, bold pilot!"

Beat me to it Clive!
He explored the envelope of the aircraft and just pushed it too far that day for thrills.

I used to teach gliding and have around 5000 flights, gave it up as the students kept finding new ways to try and kill me. Put me up a ladder and I'm not a happy chappy, strap some wings to my back and I'll pretty much go anywhere. Highest I've been in a glider was 14,500 feet...it's quite lonely up there!

Bet it was cold too!

Re the McRae incident, the tragedy was that he had passengers with him. If you are carrying passengers, whether it is one or 500, you are responsible for their safety and wellbeing. Flying illegally, without a current licence and medical, in that fashion is inexcuseable.

Never had a problem with flying, but then my father was a pilot and he took me up in loads of small planes as a kid.

Not good with heights though, and like others have commented, have the urge to jump off edges of cliffs balconies etc. Also can not drive across big bridges like the Forth Road bridge without wanting to swerve off the side.:( Either have to drive round or get someone else to drive.

Not great with tunnels either. Just about ok on the underground, but if the train stops mid station I am in trouble. Just had a huge road tunnel open near me at Hindhead, but don't think I will be driving through it. Just feel it is going to collapse on top of me.

Good news I have no problems with spiders, so if ever a spider runs amok on a plane I will have no fears.

Just remembered I have a huge fear of driving a golf ball through an avenue of trees. Hence why I prefer links golf !

we have a retired commercial Pilot in the family, he said if the public really knew the quality of the maintenance and what's allowed to get sent up then no-one would fly.

Not really what Wull wants to hear, but I loved flying, now I'm quite nervous each time sitting in a steel tube with a load of very overweight people and their overweight luggage:mmm:

i only have one fear and that is flying!!!!!

it scares the *** out of me,i've made the fatal mistake of being obsessed with planes and how they work etc which in return has caused me to crap myself at the thought of flying.

If you had have spent that much time into looking at how aircraft work then you would realise that they are so safe it is unbelievable. Every system is backed up multiple times to ensure that if you have a failure that can be taken over by another one. It is not like your car if the engine fails then it stops. Take a 4 engine aircraft. They can actually fly and land only one of them. Yes it needs all 4 to get off the ground but not in the air. It is like any other phobia though..... once it is in your head it takes a lot of bravery to stand up and face it head on.

Trust me I am an Aerospace engineer. If they are not safe I would had definitely not have flown all the way to Australia on one. I am afraid of going up ladders for gods sake....

But like most pilots he knows how to fly them but maintaining them is a different thing altogether. I get fed up with pilots trying to give feedback on problems as 99 times out of a hundred they do not have a clue what they are talking about. Lewis Hamilton can drive an F1 car but would you go to him with a question regarding maintenance of one?

I give way to your superior knowledge and yes I’ve read the crash report. What most people are used to is a helicopter just going up and coming down gently.

So, not to get too much into this, here is a video of a 44 landing over in the US with passengers. This pilot is clearly very experienced, but it’s not hard to work out that if anything happened he would have little time to recover.

I’ve been up in a few helicopters now and with a few different pilots, I’ve never felt so safe as the time I was flying with Colin. I also know, coming from the other pilots, that Colin was held in high regard for his skills.

Fear of heights. Or probably more correctly fear of falling.
If I feel safe I'm fine.
I've been lucky enough to have been up the WTC and felt perfectly safe  But put me near a cliff edge without a substantial guard rail, or up a ladder and I turn to jelly.
Rightly or wrongly, flying doesn't bother me at all.

Heights. I get the urge to jump thing aswell.

When I used to walk round St Andrews harbour when I was a kid and got too close to the edge I always felt like jumping in. Weird.

Not fluying though, never given it enough thought to have a fear. Just something you have to do....
