Whilst I'll watch a good amount of golf on tv there are some tournaments I put in the 'must not miss' category.

Ryder Cup aside, what's people's top 4 to watch, my fav's are;

1. The Open
2. The US Open
3. The WGC Matchplay
4. TPC Sawgrass

The Ryder Cup is definately my favourite as the suspense and drama is similar to watching England in World Cup.

1. Ryder Cup
2. The Open
3. The Masters
4. The Scottish Open now that it's at Loch Lomond

Will be keeping a keen eye on the FedEx Cup play-offs this year for the first time though and I think they may figure highly on my list in the future.

Masters is top viewing for a number of reasons -
1. After a long golfless winter it signals the official start of a new season and time to dust off the clubs, golfers enthusiasm is at its highest.
2 The familiarity of the back 9 holes and all the history down the years and the fact it's always close (except 97) make it compelling viewing.
3 Topographically it is hilly and offers fantastic permanent tv camera positions that don't change year to year, cameras don't wobble or get covered in rain spots during coverage. Cameraman and commentators dont lose the ball during flight.
4. 5 hours behind UK is perfect for live tv in the late evening.
The other majors are all great tournaments but dont have the visual appeal of Augusta. Ryder Cup is crap and doesn't count(been over this many times on this forum and do not wish to discuss any more).

Hmm, I really like the Masters for birdieman's reasons: perfect time slot (late Sunday evening) at the perfect time of year (Mid april, golf season still virginal-ish, last nine holes are fab) but The Open is still my #1 due to the very Britishness of the whole thing. US Open and PGA are very much course-dependant, Medinah being a personal favourite. TPC at Sawgrass: good but not quite Augusta Standards.

Elsewhere, anything from Valderrama is always worth a look and the Scottish Open from Loch Lomond is worthwhile too.
