Ok so its April, you can almost smell the Azalea's, Amen Corner is on the horizon - its Major Season.
Everyone's talking about Tiger, when are they not?- but lets for a minute revisit a time, not so long back, maybe 10-15 years, when the Majors were genuinely wide open affairs.
2008 may well prove to be the year that Woods wins all four majors in one season, and I'd love to see that happen. But another part of me longs for the days of rank outsider Steve Jones winning the US Open, of Costantino Rocca holing from the Valley of Sin to force a play-off in The Open, of Faldo and Norman, Seve and Woosnam, Langer and Lyle.
What I want to know is this - given your choice - who would you like to win the 4 biggies this year and why, and who do you think will win the Majors and why?
What my heart says
US Masters - Tiger Woods. haha an obvious choice I know but when he plays well at Augusta you cannot see past him.
US Open - always throws up a shock contender or champion.
I think Steve Stricker or Hunter Mahan have the tools to wade in here.
The Open - I've heard people talk about Tiger waltzing this one because he finished 3rd here in 1998. Ten years is a big gap, and the unfamiliarity of some tracks at The Open has undone Tiger in the past. I still plump for Tiger though - armed with his superior course management, Open record and 'The Stinger', Birkdale may well throw up Major 15 for our stripey friend.
USPGA - Oakland Hills is a course that Tiger has won at more than once and the USPGA is a tournament that has seen him produce some of his best golf. Woods to take it comfortably then and move within mouth watering distance of his grail.
What my head says
US Masters - I'd love to see Chris Di Marco finally win here as he's gone so close on Major Sunday in the past.
US Open - Andres Romero, the smiling birdie machine from Argentina has the guts and the full compliment of shots to win his first Major here at Torrey Pines. Not afraid to go for it - I hope he's smiling again here.
The Open - How about it Monty? One last hurrah? With his Ryder Cup record, Order of Merits and close calls in Majors already its a shame that people don't consider him a modern great. He is and I hope he proves it here.
USPGA - David Duval to complete the biggest comeback in Golf history and scoop his second Major. I would love it. Failing this, Sergio Garcia breaking his duck would please me after his misfortune in the Big 4.
So thats me - not a clean sweep for Tiger but 3 out of 4 isnt bad!
This is only for fun remember, We all know anything can and will happen, but lets throw some ideas about. Lets talk!
