Evening hackers,

As It's my 25th year of getting older day today I was nicely treated to a Custom Fit Session at The Mizuno National Fitting Centre in New Maldon.

Brilliant I have never ever been fitted for irons so off I trott with high hopes and expectations...did I get what I bargined for HELL YES, and slightly no...

We (SG86 Senior) and myself pole up and due to the fitting centre being on the top half of a 2 tierd range SG86 Senior couldnt warm due to his verigo making him think he was going to fall off the end of the bay. After much laughter from me when head inside.

First up introductions and pre fit chat, some heigh measurment etc and then swing speed check...

So I got on the machine that measures my swing speed, 92 mph average, wow thinks me thats fast, especially as I used 85g Regular Taylormade Steel shafts straight from the box! On the wall there is a big poster outlaying a basic guide to shafts and speeds 85+ XStiff Steel wow I think thats a bit different to what I'm using! The average distance with a 6 Iron was 196.4 after 20 shots with a 796 side spin (basically staright)and 21.1* loft so 2* stronger on the lofts. I was a borderline standard length but could get away with a 1/4" extension.

After all the trying of shafts and clubheads and grips and etc I ended up with a perfect combo -

Mizuno MP53 4-PW, 2* Strong, Project X 6.0 Shafts!! and an extra 3 layers of tape under a standard x1 layer grip!

Fantastic says me, brilliant says then bloke doing the fitting, so ego suitably enhanced I trott downstairs to the American Golf to see whats what and then go home to eat cake and smile. :D

I now need to shift my 3 month old lovely Burner 2.0 irons  and get myself some MP53's and they are longer, softer, straigher and fitted to me. :)

Hearin is a lesson to everyone, never buy an off the shelf set of clubs, get fitted because it really is worth it. For the last 10 years I have been a standard Reg shaft with standrad grips, standrad lofts - how different my swing actually is when a professional fitter is looking at it and doing lost of sciency things to read it!

I really recondmend going to a fitting centre and having a blat, my father also had a fitting and was suprised with the results as he was also non-standard.

Problems that I now have is that I am playing in a Society Comp tommorow so everytime I hit a no-so-good shot I will be thinking "it's the shaft, no it's the loft, no it's the offset!" Which will really really annoy me as I super impatient.

Thw worst bit is I went round my local in +11 today with my TM's and had an average round with them! Will be sad to see them go.

196 with a 6 iron is pretty long, surprised your off 16.
21* is a 3 iron isn't it?
Gotta ask are you over 6'1" and very large hands? Just curious as I had a muzzy fitting as well, what shafts did he recommend for the 53's

I'm taking my daughter for her birthday in a couple of weeks, sounds really good. See wants some blades, is there any pressure to buy on the day.

No. They're purely there to give you your "fitting numbers" which they give you to take away with you.
They won't pressure you to buy, from what I understand.

They will also advise on clubhead and shaft choices. Basically it is a diagnostic service. You go, get fitted and get a prescription for what is best - e.g. MP53, NS Pro 950 stiff, 1/2 inch long. 2 degrees flat, grips with 2 extra tapes etc, and then you can take that to any online or earth based seller who can fill the order at whatever price you can squeeze out of him.

It is a great service, very eye-opening and totally pressure free, apart from the pressure to hit some decent shots, that is. The fitters have heard the "I normally hit it better than this" line just about as often as GPs have heard "I only drink at weekends".

They don't sell the clubs there, so zero pressure to buy, chap told me I don't care where you buy them or even if you buy, he's a fitter first and foremost.

I needed a second fitting to affirm this was a good choice though

Its a great experience but I would think through all that they said and advised just to see that they have got it right!

I had a fitting there last November and came away realising that the fitting wasn't quite right. Firstly, because they use the upper tier you don't get to see a true flight or proper landing as it isn't a grass range, so, the only thing that the measuring system can calculate and the only thing you can see is the early stages of the flight before gravity takes over. The measuring device they used back then was quite ancient by Trackman standards and, having used Trackman elsewhere I would loved to have seen my stats on a better system.

On the actual fitting, the guy measured me and said that as my arms were quite long he was considering longer shafts but decided to stick with standard - I'm 6ft tall and it stands to reason that if my arms are longer then I need shorter shafts if anything!

Also, the fitter told me that with the 6i he was looking for a spin speed of "no more than" 5000 (if I remember right). With the Mp's I was very close at 4950'ish as I was with my own TM's but he the got me to try the JPX's which came out at nearer 5500 and said that they were ok for me. I didn't like the JPX so didn't query that one.

He couldn't print out the stats as the computer/printer wern't working properly and he never sent them as promised

I ended up trying Titleist AP2's and found, for me, they were better than the Mizzy's but I have had MX20's and MP 60's so I am not anti Mizuno but I would suggest that you think through all the stuff you were told and double check that your happy with it before ordering. Also, and finally Piece asked whether you compared the Mizzy's with your current club - did the stats improve with the new ones?

Best of luck with your choice

Chris

I have been recently and can confirm all the above regarding pressure etc.

in fact they give you a build reference number which if you give to the retailer then this will ensure the exact right clubs are ordered, also my fitter said to let him know if i placed an order as he could then chase it through etc.

Also, i asked for the screens top be printed which was fine so the DNA results and the ball flight/spin data for each of the clubs used.

All in all pretty good, and just by chance i went to a retailer in kingswood (Internet Golf Store)yesterday and they let me have a look at some shaft and club options on a trackma/flight monitor and they agreed with the spec the mizuno fitter suggsted mp53's although i did hit the taylormade TP CB's which were nice but I think they want £6 per club upcharge on a Nippon shaft.

So I will probably stick with the Mizunos and the shop in kingswood currently have a pretty good dal on them too :)

Just out of curiosity, what issue does making all the lofts stronger address?

I can understand if you want it, but can't understand why it would be recommended especially if you're hitting a 6 iron over 190yds!

Afternoon everyone, I am very red/pink today as I forgot to apply suncream today and yesterday so forgive the spelling mistakes as I'm not going to correct them. I'll try to answer some of the questions.

My ball flight baloons with my clubs and I have a very very high ball flight so 2* stronger will help me to control the height. I don't mind hitting it hihg but when I play windy courses I struggle, not over fussed about strong lofts but when I buy a set I will get them stronger.

Yes I took my TM and the dispersal rate between both sets was huge, my TM althouhg straight shot were straight left or right whereas the MP's were just straight.

I had the print off comparing all the clubs, the shafts and what I need. I'm going for a fitting at Hoebridge soon as they use trackman and vector to compare - if it's right I will purchase them.

I know the shop in Kingswood as I drive past it everyday for work, they have a great selection and are a friendly bunch so I think I'll have a look see there.

There is absolutley no pressure to buy there and then as they purely give you the numbers that work for you and tell you if you want to order from a retailer to give them the fitting sheet so that they can give you the correct set.

Had a great round today with my TM's and went round in 38points so I'm in no hurry to change untill I confirm the correct numbers and find a good price.

Regarinding the true reading being on the second teir will change it but not drastically and your not hitting a Titliest Pro V1, your hit 60% compression range balls that have been hacked, split and bashed by punters for years. You only hit good balls when the need to test for things like your swing speed and spin rate.

Got my MP52's from Direct Golf in Farnborough, after a fitting in New Malden. Have a word with Simon in there and he will do you a good deal.

Two pals went to the Mizzie fitting centre, I think its off M25, Leatherhead?) last week. Both keen to get Mizuno irons. Both very dissapointed with the fitting session. Both said they felt it was no better than going to American Golf. So not all happy campers!

Hi, good post as I am just about convinced that I am going to secure a new set of Mizzies... I was wondering hom much this personal fitting is? I assume you walk away with the stats and order elsewhere or on the spot if you want to? thanks
