Fairway mats

we had our first proper outing with mats (compulsory at our club starting 1st Nov) for the start of our winter league. 20+ pairs and the overwhelming majority of conversations in the bar afterwards was positive. Our course is clay based and gets very wet and muddy in the winter (last year was a nightmare) so playing of a nice lie instead of mud was great.
A few teething problems with the short pile spurk was that on a slope the ball rolling off was the biggest problem and not forgetting to pick it up was the other!
Hopefully the benefit will be seen on the course next season
I use the hole where, you can put a tee in , which works on our slopes..Obviously no tee involved 😉

Without going through all the comments, as I'm sure it was mentioned, but what is the best winter fairway mat you can get? Both in terms of quality, but also something that is pretty easy to carry around with you if you are carrying your clubs, rather than using a trolley?

Just go back to page 1 which is where that question was largely settled; Spurk is the winner of the popular vote.

Spurk is the go-to mat these days....it "looks" better. I disagree that it "is" better. It is certainly "cooler looking".

Spurk *Looks sturdy with a nice thick grass looking top
*Legs that will lock the mat into the ground securely.
*Comparatively heavy
*Fairly expensive
*If you hit a fat shot, the grass will try to stop the club....like the ground would.
*If ground is frozen...good luck using it.

Cheapie mat with grass on one side and smooth on the other side
*Cheap
*Closer to the ground
*Light weight
*Fat shots....club slides along smooth plastic surface. Still a crappy shot....but results in a decent shot.
*If the ground is frozen....which it does a number of times during the year for us.....no problem using.

Spurk, without a doubt. Nearly all of my golf buddies have gone for one of those. The short pile version.

My Spurk has arrived. I'll bring it and the cheapo version the club gave out on Saturday, test them out.

Sadly I'm playing my first competitive winter league match on Saturday, so my first go with it will be very unnerving. I tend to approach the ball massively from the inside, so I'm half expecting the club to hit the side of the mat first, knocking it flying and the ball just dropping off.

Set the mat down on your swing path ,jobs a good one 😉😀

Experiment with where the mat is pointing... you could set it pointing right but still line yourself up properly?😉

I'd recommend playing the ball slightly further back in the stance....I tend to hit a bit fat until I get used to the mats.

I bet like us you will still hvae members keep them instead of returning them to the bucket.
Yep, that's why my first club stopped providing them. I'd talk to guys in the rollup that had one or two of them at home. I'd tell them to bring them in....they just wouldn't do it.

Golfers are not morally better than other people.......they are just the same as everybody else....with the same amount of idiots. (not me of course:rolleyes:).
