Do ESR's get applied automatically or are they at the discretion of the handicap secretary?

Our club uses howdidido if that makes a difference.

Thanks.

The handicap software will make the recommendation of an ESR and secretaries are under instruction to accept them. So it should happen "automatically" and will reflect on your handicap on HDID.

HowDidiDo is a product from Club Systems International which simply reports results and handicaps online.

CSI is one of the ten or so companies (ISVs) that provide the actual software that runs the CONGU handicapping system for clubs.

HowDidiDo only reports information from clubs using the Club2000 or ClubV1 software. And then only if the club chooses to link to HowDidiDo.

All of the CONGU licensed software has the ESR functionality and the h'cap committee have the option of accepting or ignoring the recommendation.

Despite the recommendation to apply any ESR that are generated, there have been instances of some handicap secs not applying the recommendations. Good luck with yours.

Thank you, I'll wait and see if he applies it correctly then before asking for it.

It'll be a long bank holiday weekend wait though.

I'm not sure what you mean by "asking for it". If your handicap committee declines to accept an ESR recommendation, that's the end of it although, as has been pointed out, clubs were encouraged to accept recommendations. Are you absolutely certain that your scores will produce an ESR recommendation?

This ESR is something as a golf newbie I cannot get my head around. I won our last years open day shooting 42 points off 27. Summat and was reduced to 24.5 which I was chuffed about and thought I would reduce it even lower by the end of the season which I flipping did not. Any way a week or two later someone else at our club shot exactly the same as me in another comp, both score and stapleford points and was docked the same as me plus ESR. I was gutted and asked why and was told he had more Pars.Eh? And I still can't get my head around it.

I thought you only get an ESR reduction if you do two rounds with great scoring within a calender year ? You get flagged the first time the recommended the second time ?

Who told you he had more pars?

Although you both scored the same, the other guy must have had a previous score of 4 or more better than CSS which would be the initial ESR flag and the second round triggered the ESR recommendation. Your 42 points would have prompted the initial flag but you didn't follow it up with the second round to trigger ESR.

Well that deffo rules me out the getting two good rounds in a year.Al be happy to get two good rounds in my life at this rate.Played two weeks ago and lost three flippin balls in one round, wouldn't be so bad but it was on one hole. Two of the balls were prov1x,s.

When a player returns a Qualifying Score with a Net Differential of -4,or below, in a calendar year this triggers the ESR algorithm, setting an initial marker. An ESR calculation will be initiated the next time a Net Differential of -4 or lower is returned by the player. This second Qualifying Score will also set a new trigger for any subsequent return of another low score when the count within the ESR process would be repeated. The average Net Diferential of the two scores is then compared to the number of rounds in the sequence to establish an ESR. The application of an ESR is at the discretion of the Handicap Committee and would be applied over and above any handicap decrease already automatically applied by the system. For this reason reductions of less than one stroke may be recommended as, when combined with the decrease applied by the system, the overall reduction will always be more than one stroke.
The case for applying an additional ESR increases as the average of the two Net Differentials becomes lower and the number of scores in the sequence reduces.
Handicap Committees should always consider the player’s previous scoring history before applying any reduction recommended by the ESR process.

A couple of days after this other guy had won I was at the course and asked in the club shop how the scoring had been worked out purely out of interest. And was told that he had shot more pars. Don't get me wrong I was chuffed to bits with my reduction but puzzled how this other guys reduction was not the same as mine.

i did not know you had to have two good rounds in a year which would initiate ESR, and whilst am typing this I cannot understand/ work out if the other guy had already had a good round coz if he did would he be playing off 27. Summat.

On a positive, as reigning captains champ ave had a bit of a raffle at work to give some brass to the captains day charity and they've got £415 coming for there notts links air ambulance charity, not bad for six days selling.

I was meaning I would speak to the secretary saying I would like the extra cut if possible, didn't know if he didn't apply it first time then that would be final.

Shot a 6 undet CSS in the previous qualifier and 7 under SSS (not sure on CSS yet) today so it should be an extra 2 shots.

The person in the club shop was talking a load of tosh.

The other guy could have been off exactly 28 when he did his first good score. If he was on CSS -4 he would have been reduced to 26.4 and he would only need one 0.1 increase to be off 27.

I would be astounded if your Handicap Committee didn't apply ESR with those scores.

I got my handicap reduction but no ESR.

Emailed the club asking why and the software hadn't flagged me up for one. They emailed software company and all got sorted so no more two shot holes for me

Did the ISV come up with an explanation?

A 'cultural trait' of anyone in the Club Pro Shop is the inability to say 'I don't know'!

Similar to the cultural trait of Indian IT (and probably other occupations) folk of not being able to say 'No'!

Plenty of other classic cultural stereotypes that are spot on too!
