Despite my putting woes yesterday I was quite pleasantly surprised with my iron play. Hitting the ball really well, and this was highlighted on one particular hole.
Started from the 10th, got to the 12th which is quite a tight, treelined par 4, reasonably short hole, 363 yards off the white tees.
For "safety" I hit my 5 wood down here, hit it quite well with a nice bit of draw, found myself about 145 out but the ball was sitting down a little in an old divot. Not too bad a lie though.
No wind to speak of and the pin was cut at the back of the green according to the flag colour.
8 iron I thought to myself. Took the club out of the bag, couple of practice swings while waiting for the green to clear, and when it was my turn I gave it a fair old thump. Beautiful iron shot, my playing partners all said "great strike". I could not have hit it any sweeter. It flew straight as an arrow, pitched the heart of the green and bounced on just a few feet leaving myself a 6 footer for a birdie. Forget the 3 putts that followed..
As I was putting the club away I noticed.....I'd hit a bloody 9 iron, not an 8!
Now I'm never normally long with my approach shots, like 90% of club golfers I tend to come up a little short of the flag.
But this really surprised me because I was sure as eggs is eggs that that shot was an 8 iron shot for me.
