Despite my putting woes yesterday I was quite pleasantly surprised with my iron play. Hitting the ball really well, and this was highlighted on one particular hole.
Started from the 10th, got to the 12th which is quite a tight, treelined par 4, reasonably short hole, 363 yards off the white tees.
For "safety" I hit my 5 wood down here, hit it quite well with a nice bit of draw, found myself about 145 out but the ball was sitting down a little in an old divot. Not too bad a lie though.
No wind to speak of and the pin was cut at the back of the green according to the flag colour.
8 iron I thought to myself. Took the club out of the bag, couple of practice swings while waiting for the green to clear, and when it was my turn I gave it a fair old thump. Beautiful iron shot, my playing partners all said "great strike". I could not have hit it any sweeter. It flew straight as an arrow, pitched the heart of the green and bounced on just a few feet leaving myself a 6 footer for a birdie. Forget the 3 putts that followed..
As I was putting the club away I noticed.....I'd hit a bloody 9 iron, not an 8!
Now I'm never normally long with my approach shots, like 90% of club golfers I tend to come up a little short of the flag.
But this really surprised me because I was sure as eggs is eggs that that shot was an 8 iron shot for me.

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D

...And senile, you forgot you knobbed your first tee shot 50 yards :D

Actually, I think what this shows is how inaccurate we are in terms of strike, swing speed, and resultant distance. You could probalby hit the same shot with a 7, 8, or 9, and they would feel equally well struck.

Lol. Only teasing Smiffy. I've hit the wrong club before but only once been pleased with the result but it was due to poor strike. Like murph hit a 6 instead of a 9 fatted it and wound up on the green. Never hit the wrong club sweetly and ended up where I wanted to be.

No. This was a proper, spanked shot. Lots of forward on it, and it went exactly where I wanted it to go. I know a good shot when I hit one, and this was a proper one.
Now, you were going to tell us about "there's no such thing as sidespin"
Go on
;)

I was about 130 out yesterday but into a pretty strong wind so I thought 7 iron to middle of the green then roll to the back where the pin was.
Hit the 7 great and it went exactly where I wanted. Cue pitch mark and backspin. Firts time. Typical! (and with a 7 :D :D)

I have hit a 3 iron instead of a 7 iron
The result wasnt really that bad there was a bit of a hill at the back of the green so the ball stopped in the long grass there (could have beeen so much worse)

The difference in dstance between the two clubs is made up of 80% loft change, and 20% shaft length change. Therefore, if you deloft the 9 by 3 degrees, you will get very close to the distance of your 8 iron. You wouldn't notice delofting by 3 degrees in the flight pattern, and it would feel a good shot.

Either that, or it was one of those rare strikes where everything comes together and you realise what it must be like to hit the ball properly. I hit an 8 iron 180 once. Never done it again. Didn't want to then either.

Hit a similar shot on the 18th on Friday.

Swung like a maniac with the driver and thinned my shot. Result being an ugly low scuttler, but boy, did it motor! Ran for miles. I was amazed when I got to my ball just how far it had run. Followed it up with a sweetly struck 3 wood and I was just off the green on a 425 yard hole. Chipped on and 2 putted for a bogey finish. Quite a decent outcome for my standard.

It's the old 'relaxed muscles work better syndrome', innit.

You thought you had plenty of club, you didn't need to force it, and it thwumped right out of the sweetspot.

The fact it was in a slight divot might have helped a tad as well. You needed to hit down on it, so you kept your hands forward to get that very slight deloft you mentioned.

Put it all together, and what have you got ?

Another three putt bogie, of course.

( Now this is the point that I have some experience of - I can talk about failure to get the ball in the hole for hours ).

What he said.
Did you take a nice divot?

simular to me on saturday smiffy. Hit one good drive all day (5th) and the rest were hooks and duck hooks all day. got to the 18th at Ashdown and noticed the first stream is about 225 on the right (no change of getting the right side of a fairway that day) and 245/250 on the left. Opted for an easy 5 wood aiming at about 220/230 ish which should have laid me up perfectly.

No practice swing as im totally deflated having lost the front 9 and the match so swing just for the sakes for it.

Result:

an absolutely bang on 3 wood sttaight out the button, slight draw (my normal shot) straight down the middle which finished up about 240 yards. From the tee it looked in absolutely perfect position. When i got there i noticed id cut it to close and was now blocked by the tree.... BALL-AXE¬!

Actually Murph I think you've explained it. Smiffy said the ball was sitting down in a divot. To get a good strike you should move the ball back in your stance so you hit down on it so what if he did hit down on it and elofted the club as you've said. Hey presto an 8 iron.

I haven't accidently hit the wrong club recently, but I did hit the right club wrongly, if you know what I mean.

The 150 markerposts are to the centre of the green. And I was exactly 150 out. How do I know? Coz I had the post up my rectum on the backswing.

150 is a 6I for me, so I hit a regular, non stressed swing at it. And fatted it bigtime. I looked up, expecting it to fall 30 yards short, and hopefully roll another 10 yards.

But

It pitched on the green, just a few yards short of the flag, and rolled out to about 15 feet.

And how did I finish the hole ?

With a 3 putt bogey, of course.
