ES12 Launch monitor

just in process of buying one from the states, there is guy selling them at www.golfgps.org.uk/ but its 14 days delivery
http://ernestsports.com/es12/

Let us know how it compares to what you actually know.

Like OS I'd like to see it side by side with Trackman, especi as it seemed to throw the odd big reading up and as it reads from the side not directly behind the ball at set up.

They look great for the price. Ok it doesn't measure ball spin, and the distance is just a calculation from preset club lofts and ball speed, but should be close enough for most average golfers to get better club distance gapping shouldn't....? There's mixed reviews in the stats over on WRX but I take 99% of what's posted on there with the usual USA exaggerations...

Gjbike - do you mind me asking what it's cost to get over from the states?

i spotted this a few weeks ago. i was reading the 3gps thread thing. personally i like it but probably gain more or of one of the othert gadgets on the market.

i'm not sure it would be that accurate?
from my understanding its just measuring is the initial ball speed, not the direction, of the ball, its getting that information from whether you type in driver or seven iron etc.
just thinking their might be inaccuracies if you use a 8 degree driver or a 12 etc and depending on if you hit up or down on the ball
or am i missing something?

It looks really cool. the only things I am wondering about are can you use it in a net? They say you can use it indoors, but does a shot hit into a net give it enough time to calculate the distance accurately? Does it depend on what ball you use? For example, if you use it on a range with range balls, will it give you the distance of the range ball that we know doesn't go as far as a proper ball? I assume it does, as they say you can use it for ball selection. This is a bit of a prolem for those of us without access to a practice ground big enough to use proper golf balls. The warranty is only 90 days which is a bit worrying. I have sent an email asking the questions. I will post the answers. I really hope it is as good as it seems. It combines 2 of my favourite things, golf and gadgets!:) Brilliant!

Thinking about this and breaking it down as it doesn't cover spin rates impact angles or launch etc it has to be using standard info to calculate distance.

There has to be a simple formula which this works on:

Say you choose a driver, the machine no doubt works out the average length say 45", does something funky like 45" shaft length + 105 swing speed (mine) x 1.5 (perfect smash factor is apparently SS x 1.5) = distance.

Or
45" + 105 = 150 x 1.5 = 225 yards - this would actually be about right ;)

It's basically a small speed camara, you enter your club, it works out the ball speed the club info formula, hey presto!

I would not trust the distances it gives you, seems like a waste of money to me.

From their website:
"The ES12 tracks distance. The ES12 will measure the ball speed after impact and calculate the distance the ball will travel"

It does not "track" distance as it measures ball speed and bases it's distance on the ball speed and club used. Again from their website "The ES12 does not measure launch and spin however, based on field testing with the Iron Byron, the ES12 reacts to various launch and spin conditions"

Spin and launch angle have a huge bearing on how far a shot will travel

Don't waste your money, spend it on lessons.
