I missed the G10 but had (still have) the G15. Is a really good driver, just has the wrong shaft for me and not an easy swap.
Not saying it was a dud I just think Ping could have missed out the 15 and probably the 20 wood lines, gone straight to 25s and nobody would have noticed.

I had the Callaway FTI square driver, similar to the sumo, very loud, awful sounding, always struggled with it. This was a replacement that I was given after my clubs were stolen.
I had a couple of FTi's. The last one was a low spinning LCG version and I hit my longest ever drive with it, the 14th, Viaduct, at The Roxburghe. Wind behind, elevated tee and I hit it 350 yards. The society in front had it as their longest drive hole and I was 50 yards in front of their best.

That society also took over 5 hours to get around so there may have been a bit of anger in there. There was no excuse for the 8 iron second shot into a green side bunker, the ensuing thin and the final bogey 6. That was just sheer ineptitude.

Cleveland Classic drivers - metal made to look like persimmon woods

The most underrated clubs of their time, still superb today, I have the Classic XL and love it. I doubt it will leave the bag for a long time. My last two drives with it were nearly driving a par 4 followed by a 280 dink down the middle. It spins perfect and flights lovely, no reason to change at all!

Not sure I remember this correctly, but didn’t Lynx release a new Driver with a heated headcover that numerous people felt obliged to inform them was quite possibly against the rules of golf........

Your memory is correct Sir.
Didn't it have a gas inside that, if heated to a specific temperature, improved the performance..

The Nike Sumo certainly seems to be getting a lot of votes, and with some justification.

I still remember the first time I hit mine down the range. About made my ears bleed and brought the whole 25 bay range to a standstill, with one or two of our older members, who were old enough to remember the blitz, sporting a very haunted look when they heard the din.

Scott detour putters. So ugly, no one bought them.

The Callaway square driver, FT3? Went no where, just didn't perform, at all. Af least the Nike version put it out there.

Titleist 907 D1 triangular thing. What was that all about. Just not a Titleist driver, especially after the 905 series.

Macgegor doctorx, just a bad idea. If you value your eyesight, don't Google it.

The Browning 440 irons, low profile low COG, fine from a fairway lie but tricky from the rough.

All clubs were low profile apart from the sand wedge which was like any other, bought a set myself for the novelty but rarely play them.

1606688707236.png

They spawned a short lived fashions for low profile irons, offerings came from most manufacturers but I only have pictures of the UK brands, I'll list them but won't post pictures.
The Brownings came out in 1978 and the fashion was over by 1980.

Ben Sayers - Slimilne
Dunlop - Maxfli low profile
Dunlop - Powerflow
John Letters - LP 100
Ryder - Low Pro
Slazenger - Peter Alliss LP Model

I seem to recall that the Ping G15 wood range didn't get a lot of love.....I don't think many thought it better than the G10.
G15 Driver (w 'upgrade'/low torque shaft) was a great club for me! No idea about FWs though. Has seemed to be a 'gap' in their historic range too.

There was a period towards the end of the persimmon era when large headed drivers filled with cork to keep the weight down were made to try and compete with the shift to large headed metal woods, probably the best known now is the Wood Bros Corker.

Odyssey used to do putters with metal mesh glued onto the insert. After 18 months the glue failed and the mesh came away.

FairPlay, Callaway did a replacement on the first putter and then gave me newer model without the mesh when that failed.
I must have got one with some decent glue, still using my #7. Beat to hell but can't shift it.
