"Epic films"

If this was a Desert Island discs thing my choice of films to take would be

WWII - The Great Escape.
Humour - The Life of Brian.
Western - El Dorado.
Ancient - Gladiator.
Sci fi - The first of the new Star Wars.
Thriller - The Bourne Identity.
Gangster - The Road to Perdition.

And the winner is................. Gladiator!

Was such a good choice of films until you swore at me with that choice of Star Wars film. From Star Wars IMO none of the new ones cut the mustard I'd have gone with Empire Strikes Back.

my list if i was ill at home for some classics would be:

Zulu
Great escape
italian job
bridge over the river kwai
star wars trilogy
ET
Scarface
the godfather
Any classic bond film

Also love disney and kids films, robin hood, dumbo, jungle book..

Modern day classics for me would be:

Forrest Gump (my all time fav film)
Fight club
pulp fiction
the day after tomorrow
gladiator
silence of the lambs
Leon
robocop
terminator 1 (add in some other classic arnie films, predator, red heat, the running man, raw deal)

Then some silly "classics"

The waterboy
caddy shack
happy gilmore
dodgeball
the mask
most early stuff from either Jim Carey, Adam Sandler or ben stiller..

I'm hoping Hobbit's had a sneak preview screening of episode 7 and it's so gargantuanly brilliant that he couldn't keep his mouth shut and has had to drop hints in order to prevent his head exploding!

My younger brother and I always looked forward to the Vikings with Kirk and Tony.
Our father always told us he was one of the vikings throwing the axes and pushing the battering ram in the battle scene at the end.

He wasn't by the way, but it was fun thinking he was for a good few years.

I'd forgotten all about that film - certainly deserves the accolade of epic

Some very good choices, I see. The question is , what defines an "epic" film? I saw a programme over Xmas which was about all these old films. Some also call them "sword and sandals" epics.

It's probably hard to define and also down to personal taste, but this programme picked ones mainly made in the 50's and 60's, and they were all along the lines of Ben Hur, Cleopatra, El Cid (haven't seen that one, yet), Spartacus, ten commandments etc. Normally all 3 hour plus films, also.

Personally, I would also put in Zulu and another favourite was the battle of the bulge, which I haven't seen that on the telly for ages. You've also got the fictionalised ones such as Jason and the argonauts and the sinbad films.

LB, Make time for El Cid - one of my all time top ten films.

Other epics I like have already been mentioned by others. Top of the list for me is "Seven Samurai" - an absolute must watch!

Is it the Japanese version, or the Tom Cruise one?

I'll keep my eye out for El Cid.

The Big Country
The Vikings
Jean de Floret/Manon des Sources
Letters from Iwojima
Crash
Cloud Atlas -weird but epic
How the west was won
Lawrence of Arabia
