England Vs New Zealand

Good to finally get over the line.

Thought this one might slip away as well the way the Kiwi's started the second half but good to see us hang in.

Removing the corner flag from touch has lead to some pretty spectacular tries in recent years but I don't recall seeing one were the winger (Nightingale) dived over the top of the full back (Hardacre) himself diving to make the tackle.

The look on Hardakers face when he missed him low was priceless

Totally baffled at how he missed him.

Mind you, Hardaker should take some credit for nightingales quick thinking. I think he was dreading getting banjoed by Hardaker into touch like what had happened about 15 minutes earlier.

That was a cracking tackle.

To be fair. The big English pack was smacking the kiwis around for fun at certain parts of the game. Was great to see them do it.

Its a direct quote from an England Union player from the 80's (whose name escapes me), when Mike Harrison was captain. It has no relevance to any other sport inc league, but you weren't to know that:o
No need to feel silly

Aye, silly me for taking it completely out of context.

So is it cliched chip on your shoulder Southern bollards.

Nope. one was a throw away comment based on a historical quote, it's a throw away sound bite, but does reference the sometime obsession with all things northern. case in point farrell Jnr's selection over cipriani. One is a forthright northern lad, solid dependable etc. The other a fancy Dan, shandy drinking southerner, who can smash a game wide open.

It's no slight on league as a sport, though there is a misguided view that Union can purchase league ability and parachute it in. The 'yawnion', kick and clap stuff, is a cliche. It's not even accurate based on the recent World Cup.

I don't really get why you can't have a thread about league without a cliched dig at Union, but then you've always had a complex since 1895, maybe it's the lack of sunlight:o

As a dyed in the wool born & bred Southern shandy drinking softie, I was brought up with the Union superiority complex that theirs was the better game and that the flat capped whippet owning Northerners should consider themselves lucky that Union allowed them to use the word rugby to describe the game that was played North of Watford. Yet the first time that the opposing codes took each other on, Bath conceded 3 tries to their technically inferior foes, two of which started in Wigan's in goal and went the length of the field. The league fixture, which the technically superior Union boys would obviously be able to take in their stride resulted in an 82 - 6 thrashing of Bath.

That was nearly 20 years ago, yet league fans still suffer cheap jibes from the supposedly superior code. After 120 years of this, do you really wonder why we dig back?

'They drew first blood Col. Trautmann'!!!

League's a great sport, I've said that. It's the north I've got issues with. :o

I don't recall anyone thinking an amateur Bath team would beat a fully professional Wigan in 1996. What a pointless exercise that was.

They're different sports, that share some similarities, none of the union World Cup threads mentioned league except in ref to slammin Sam. I don't see why this one references 'yawnion'

Maybe they'd like some salt with they're chips :o

I was at that game and the Bath Supporters actually thought they would smash us. There was a unanimous smugness by them that they would simply brush Wigan aside.

I was only 15 at the time bit was questioning the sanity of them as this was probably the greatest Rugby League side ever assembled. Well it was toward the twilight of our main era of success, but they still put out a decent side

We absolutely took them apart at the joint, it was comical at times. To be fair to the Bath lot, they must have seen it coming. Jeremy Guscott blatantly refused to play against us. Maybe the pansy did not fancy going up against inga tuigamala and Jason Robinson (before he got slow).

Was a cracking day

Guscott just realised it was nonsense. More impressive I reckon was when Wigan won the Middlesex 7's maybe a year later. It was a big deal then and they won it quite comfortably. I'd like to say I was there, but I don't remember :o (pimms in the west carpark ;))

The best thing league did for us was giving us bentos and Scotty Gibbs back for the lions in 97:thup:

Or Giving you Jason Robinson in order to liven up that penatly'a'thon World Cup final of yours.:D

and

NO WAY im i having that the Barth team (or any top flight RU team) were actually amateur in 96.

There would have been more brown envelopes flying around then than hot dinners

Those boys would have all been cashed up to the max and training like full time pros.

100% shamateur training at lambridge twice a week. Jerry guscott used to work with my old man in 'marketing' ;)

Cheers for billy wizz, that try made a interesting change from the procession of scrum penalties (you've got me doing it now:o)

X2 things I dislike about league. Firstly, I find when they hump the ground at tackle time, slightly worrying....but not as worrying as when Stevo talks direct to the camera during his punditry. (Does he still do the sky coverage). It makes me uncomfortable:o

If that's the only two things it's not doing bad:thup: I prefer league much more as a sport however it is a million miles behind Union as far as the internationals go down to there only being 3 competitive nations which makes it much less of a spectacle. Be boring if we all liked the same thing though!

Stevo and Eddie Hemings have become an actual parody of themselves over the last few years. I think they both need sending to the knackers yard personally. I don't think I'm alone in that either.

Phil Clarke has taken up the mantle of gazing you right in the eyes in your living room during his boring stats orientated blurb.

Seen a few folk have adopted that though. What's his face Andrew Coltartt does it on the euro tour now. Bloody annoying.
